Chuck, Harris J. "Chuck" VISTA -- Harris Chuck was born August 18, 1917 in New York to Sadie and William B. Chuck. He passed away on April 18, 2014 at the age of 96 in Vista, California. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940. At the beginning of WWII, Chuck was captured on Guam on December 10, 1941 and taken to a prison camp on Osaka, Japan where he spent the duration of the war. In 1952, he served in the Korean War. He went to Vietnam in 1966 and began the first of two tours there. In 1946, he married Eileen Whyte in Chicago. They moved to Vista in 1948 and built their home where they raised three children. In 1954, while on recruiting duty, he attended U.C. Berkley and received his G.E.D. returning to Vista in 1957. During his thirty years in the U.S. Marine Corps, he received 16 combat medals, then retired as a Sgt. Major in 1970. After retirement he attended Palomar College and San Diego State University. He worked as a teacher for the Jr. ROTC program at Oceanside High School; opened a Chinese catering business; became a school bus driver instructor; and drove a truck for several years around the country for All Corps Trucking. Chuck was proud to give back to his community as a 45 year member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Vista Elks Lodge, Vista Hispano Club, Whirl-a-Ways, a board member for the Vista Girls Club, Lifeline Community Services as well as the Vista Traffic Advisory Board. Chuck had the privilege of being selected to be on the Grand Jury for the County of San Diego. He attended All Saints Episcopal Church and St. Francis Church. In his later years, one of his favorite things was to have lunch at the Sunrise Café in Vista where he made many new friends. Chuck never knew a stranger. Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Eileen in 2002; and son, Thomas Edward in 2012. He is survived by his brother, Bill of Connecticut; children, Lisa Griggs (Jim) of Oregon and Carol (Tom) of Temecula; grand- daughters, Tamara, Jennifer, and Camille; grandsons, Gary and David; great-grandsons, Anthony and Jacob; nieces, Pat, Joan, and Lori; nephews, Rick and Barry; and his beloved cat, Dusty. A celebration of Chuck's life will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Anglican Church, 4055 Oceanside Blvd. #P in Oceanside, followed by the burial with military honors at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside at 12:30 p.m. There will be a gathering of friends and family from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Vista Elks Lodge. Chuck loved parties so wear happy colors! In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Vista Elks Lodge #1968.
