Carlile, Morton J. 12/22/1924 ~ 04/18/2014 SAN DIEGO-- On April 18, 2014, Morton J. Carlile passed away peacefully and was reunited with his wife of 59 years,Sammie, who predeceased him on that very date, 6 years earlier. Born in Los Angeles on December 22, 1924 and adopted out of the orphanage Sons & Daughters of the Golden West in Long Beach, California by Ruelof & Helen Joldersma. Mort, as he preferred to be known, spent the majority of his life in San Diego where he graduated from San Diego High School; enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the OSS during WWII. Subsequently changing his middle name to his last name upon leaving the service and entered the insurance business, where he had an extremely successful 57 year career. When not working, he could be found on the water racing a variety of sailboats out of the San Diego Yacht Club, where he was most recently member #1. Mort was a sailing champion, skippering and crewing, winning races and regattas at the local, national and international level. For Mort, it was a life of work, sailing, and family. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Jennifer Carlile Foley. He is survived by his son, Gary Carlile (Susan); daughter, Christy Carlile Wilson (Trip); son, Jeff Carlile (Carol); son, Bruce Carlile (Kathy); grandchildren, Daniel Carlile (Stephanie); Kristen Wilson; Kelly Carlile Ezzard (Andrew); Brett Carlile; Chase Carlile; Brittany Wilson; and great granddaughter, Piper Carlile. A memorial service will be held at the San Diego Yacht Club, June 6, 2014, at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Diego Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program, 1011 Anchorage Lane, San Diego, CA 92106; and to Sonata Hospice, 8825 Aero Dr, San Diego, CA 92123.
