Dr. Patrick Joseph Holland Obituary
Holland, Dr. Patrick Joseph EL CAJON -- Dr. Patrick Joseph Holland, 65, died peacefully at his Mt. Helix home in El Cajon, on July 15, 2014, in the arms of his beloved wife, Stephanie, and daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Richard Freye. Born in Iowa City, Iowa, on October 10, 1948, to Paul and Winifred (Spratt) Holland, he graduated from Iowa City High School in 1966 and the University of Iowa in 1970. He later earned a doctorate in education from USC. An amazing father, he is survived by four children: Paul Holland of Iowa City, Juanita (Josh) Ramirez-Gridley of Ottumwa, Iowa, Jennifer (Richard) Freye of El Cajon, and Gregory (Christina) White of Santee. "Pappy" is also survived by four grandchildren, with a granddaughter due in October: Lance Breon of Ottumwa, Spencer Freye of El Cajon, and Brianna and Benjamin White of Santee. He is also survived by his wife of 27 years, Stephanie (Krebs) Holland; a sister, Nancy (Randy) Lackender; and three brothers: Stephen Holland, Daniel Holland, and Robert (Diane) Holland. A superb educator, he also touched the lives of innumerable other children, to whom he referred as "kids" or "kiddos." His motto was always, "It's all about the kids." Their schools and their lives, as well as other educators, were better because of him, his integrity, and his dedication to children. His career began as a teacher and coach in Iowa, followed by principal and superintendent positions in several school districts in Arizona, New Mexico, and California. After his retirement and pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2011, he continued to be involved in educational pursuits, helping co-found an online learning center, with a focus on dropout prevention, and the completion of a book devoted to education, to be published posthumously. Dr. Holland's life will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, August 16, at Unity Church of El Cajon, 311 Highland Ave., El Cajon, CA. Donations may be made to UC San Diego Foundation, Fund #4214, Research for a Cure for Pancreatic Cancer (foundation.ucsd.edu).
