Obituary Condolences

SWERDLOW, ABRAHAM October 22, 1920 to November 17, 2012 Abe grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Tilden High School and Brooklyn College, and worked as a chemist until he was drafted into the Army. Upon his discharge in 1944, he studied dentistry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco, and married his Brooklyn next-door neighbor, Regina (Jean) Kuchinsky. The couple moved to southern California, where Abe practiced dentistry and where their daughters were born. The family settled in Pasadena, except for one year spent in San Diego while Abe served as a Navy dentist. He fell in love with the climate, moved the family there in 1956, and remained there until his death. Dr. Swerdlow was an orthodontist for three decades. He enjoyed working with the children and teens in his practice. Abe and Jean divorced in 1963; later, he was briefly married to Barbara Hoffer. He was athletic, especially enjoying bicycling, and hiking in Yosemite. After retirement, he traveled, and met his long-distance love of 15 years, Netherlander Mies Geurts. Abe was predeceased by his beloved closest friends Eugene Berger and David Edelson, as well as by his parents Joseph Swerdlow and Rose Broidy, sister Sarah, and brother Benjamin. Gentle, intelligent, modest, frugal, sometimes curmudgeonly, always a kidder, he was a good father. Daughters Susan Swerdlow of Oakland and Emily Moore of Seattle, niece Maxine Sopenoff-Rizzuto of Lake Worth, Florida, and nephew Steven Swerdlow of Newport Beach, California, survive him. A huge thank-you is due the caregivers and schedulers at All Valley Home Care for years of wonderful work with Abe. Thanks also to the caring Kaiser Hospice staff. A memorial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, at 2216 Fenton Parkway, Apt. 112, San Diego. Contributions may be made in Abe's name to the Nature Conservancy.
