Obituary Condolences

WESTMORELAND, BILL F. Sept. 5, 1936 to Dec. 10, 2012 Bill Westmoreland passed away suddenly of a heart attack in the hospital on Dec. 10, 2012. Bill was born Sept. 5, 1936 in Grider, Ky. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 yrs, Norma, his son, Victor, daughter-in-law, Darci, granddaughter, Josie, son Brian; brother Neal Poindexter and family, sister Shirley Bogard and family, and sister Reba Adcock and family, all of Ky; brother-in-law Donald Reilly, brother-in-law Robert Reilly and family; and many nieces and nephews. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1973. He had a varied career in the USMC. He served in Korea, had two tours in Japan and Okinawa, also Puerto Rico, Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Camp Pendleton. Two tours in Vietnam, one as a Marine Guard at the Embassy in Saigon, also as a Gunnery Sgt. in a CAC in Tam Ky. Bill did one tour in Moscow as an Embassy Guard. In 1967, after his last tour in Vietnam, he returned home to marry his sweetheart Norma, then reported to MCRD San Diego to serve as a Drill Instructor. From 1970 to 1973 he was on I&I duty in Concord, Ca. In 1973 he retired as a First Sgt and returned to San Diego. From 1975 to 1995 he worked as a Water Plant Operator for the City of San Diego. In 1997, after he retired from the City, he began his career as a Volunteer Docent for the MCRD Command Museum, where he made many friends and touched many lives. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. Semper Fi Bill. You will live in our hearts forever. Memorial services will be held Jan 11, 1 pm at the MCRD Chapel, followed by a reception at the MCRD Command Museum to celebrate his life. All are welcome.
