Duane Gish Obituary

Gish, Duane T. SAN DIEGO - Dr. Duane T. Gish, 92, went to be with his Creator on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Dr. Gish, along with his identical twin brother Donald, was born in White City, Kansas. In World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Captain and receiving the Bronze Star for meritorious service. After the war, Dr. Gish received a B.S. degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as an Assistant Research Associate at Berkeley and Assistant Professor at Cornell University Medical College. In 1960 he joined the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he served as a senior research associate in biochemistry. In 1971, Dr. Gish became the Vice President of the Institute for Creation Research, located in San Diego at that time. In that capacity, he traveled across the United States and to many foreign countries speaking and debating in defense of scientific creationism. Known as "Creation's Bulldog," Dr. Gish defended creationism from the standpoint of the scientific evidence. His encyclopedic knowledge and winsome way often won over the most aloof audience and sometimes even disarmed his most avid opponents. He authored many scientific articles and books, including Evolution? The Fossils Still Say NO! Dr. Gish was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Lorraine and is survived by his second wife of 11 years, Lolly, two sons, Duane (Randy) Gish and Darrell Gish, two daughters, Sandra Slaughter and Laurie Knapp, two step- sons, Rick Bliss and Jeff Bliss, nine grandchildren, three step-grandsons, and three great-grand- children. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6th, at Shadow Mountain Community Church, 2100 Greenfield Dr., El Cajon, CA, reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Institute for Creation Research or the Alzheimer's Association will be appreciated.

I saw him debate in Tallahassee circa 1990. I wish I had known him. I hope peoples world view and eternities were changed by his life. I often struggle with my salvation. As scripture says, the very things I know I should not do, I keep on doing. The things I should do, I just don´t do. In our walk with God , it often takes a friend to encourage us. I´m sure Dr. Gish had to , as the song says "stand alone on the word of God" . He did so admirably. I pray God will give me the strength to do the same.

May you always be remembered not only for your strong stand on the fossil record and creation; but for your friendship, humor and caring for others.

As you remain in the loving arms of Jesus

It was truly a pleasure and ultimate privilege to serve Dr. Gish as his secretary, for a number of years. I worked in this capacity even after he retired. He was a marvelous, caring, Christian human being who always saw humor in every situation. He is greatly missed and know his gracious and generous spirit lives on. I wish one of your children would contact me and let me know how Lolly 2 is getting along.

It was a privilege to have known you and work with you, over the years at ICR. May you and our Savior have many chats now face to face.

We never met but I was honored by your faithful defense of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and of a literal belief in the Holy Scripture.

Duane; we met around 1968 when I was at the Salk Institute and you were assigned by Upjohn to evaluate a Patent we were filing. Upjohn eventually took a license for the technology. We had good conversations about creation/evolution. I miss you, but you are now in the house of God, and I rejoice for you. Love,
Bob Sanchez
