Edward Campbell Obituary

CAMPBELL, EDWARD J. April 30, 1927 to June 16, 2007
Edward J. Campbell, 80, of El Cajon, passed away on June 16th surrounded by his loving family at Grossmont Hospital. He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts; he was a retired branch claims manager for the Farmers Ins. Office in El Cajon. Preceded in death by his son, Michael Edward Campbell; survivors include his wife of 56 years,"Tommie," daughter, Susan Stammen, son-in-law Randy Stammen, three grandchildren, Melissa MacArthur, Dru Fears, and Heidi Raymond, and a great-grandchild, Alexis Raymond. Edward is also survived by his sister, Pat Rogers-Thompson, nephew; Patrick Rogers, and many grand-nephews and nieces. Because Edward's father was a Chief Radio Man in the U.S. Navy, he spent his youth in the jungles of Panama, primarily at a transmitter station in Darian. He then spent three years on Oahu, Hawaii, where he became not only a witness but also a survivor to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941. When the Navy transferred the re-united Campbell family to Oregon, Edward attended Union High School at Seaside. Upon his graduation, he enlisted in the Navy at Astoria, and was assigned to LST 485. After the war's end and his honorable discharge from the Navy and Naval reserve duty, Edward enrolled in the school of education at Oregon State University, receiving a B.S. degree in 1950. Edward's keen supportive interests throughout his years in El Cajon included Lexington School's PTA, Cub & Boy Scouts, Pop Warner Football, El Cajon Elk's Lodge #1812, El Cajon VFW post #2275, the Sons & Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, and of course, being a great fan of the San Diego Chargers. Out of the U.S., he responded to the works of the Marie Curie Hospice, Hampstead, London. A private graveside service and burial will be held at the Singing Hills Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Edward's Life at the El Cajon Elk's Lodge #1812, 1400 E. Washington, El Cajon, at 2 p.m., June 28, 2007. Our family wishes to give a special thanks to the El Cajon Fire Department Paramedics for their quick responsive care, treatment, and respect to a very special loved one. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that donations be made to "the scholarship fund" sponsored by the El Cajon Elk's Lodge, #1812, in Edward's name. "Uncle Eddie" was a dear friend to both John and myself! He will be missed. His dry sense of humor was always a admired. John and him had many a tale to tell between them. Bless the family and our love to all. John and Dottie Hayes

I knew Ed as a Football Coach and also as a good friend of mine and my fathers. Our family would like to express our deepest sympathy to Tommie,Suzie, The rest of Ed's Family and all of their friends. We are deeply sorry for your loss.
Ed was a very good man and a role model for many kids in the El Cajon area. He he helped instill values of hard work and the rewards it brings to me as my coach and as a friend. He always had a bit of encouragement,a kind word, a big smile, and even some good stories.
He was a good friend of my fathers and I know that they were close and helped each other throughout the years.
Ed you will be missed greatly.......... Thank you for your friendship.
