Bates, Frederick M. SAN DIEGO -- Born January 19, 1929 in San Angelo, TX, Fred, 84, passed away on August 13, 2014 in his beloved home of 59 years. His family was at his side. A retired Marine Corps Colonel and decorated Korean War Veteran, Fred was Commander of the 4th Tank Battalion from 1966 to 1970. He was a lifelong educator; teaching, coaching, and counseling in the San Diego City schools since 1953. He was the District's Curriculum Consultant for Health and Physical Education; 1982 to 1989. Fred loved nature, Sunday drives, tennis, fishing, and was an avid reader. As a former running back for SDSU, he enjoyed going to Aztec games and being with family and friends. SEMPER FI, Dad. Fred was preceded in death by a dear grandson, Taylor; and by his wife of 53 years, Viola Fay. Fred and Fay were alums of Kearny High. She was his high school sweetheart and the light of his life. They loved music, dancing, and the Races. We imagine their joy as they do a jitterbug up to the Pearly Gates. We extend deep gratitude to Dad's longtime caregiver and friend Kevin; and staff: Grissel, Xochtl, and Linda. Dad's life was brighter because of you. Fred is survived by his children: Vhey Benet, Randy Bates, Sileen Bednarski, and their spouses: Mark, Emily, and Dan; brother, Hugh Bates and wife Claudia; grandchildren, Christopher, Rachelle, Sarah, Tera, and Halla; also Jared, Mikal, Monic and Catharine; and great-grandson, Aiden. Services include a private event at Fort Rosecrans, August 25th, and a Community Celebration of his life in November.
