Gilbert Rule Obituary
Rule, Gilbert USMC, Firefighter, Lifeguard, Surfer, OMBAC DEL DIOS -- Gilbert Rule's passion for being a firefighter and lifeguard materialized in his longtime service to the City of San Diego, and the community of Del Dios. On August 15, Gil died after a long battle with COPD, he was 79. He graduated from La Jolla High School in 1951 and joined the San Diego City Lifeguards. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After his active duty in the military, he returned to the city lifeguards, and in 1962 began his career with the San Diego Fire Dept. He retired as an Engineer in 1984. Gil was involved in the Del Dios Community for more than 40 years, with 14 years on the Volunteer Fire Dept., until retirement as a Battalion Chief. His commitment to his country and community was extraordinary. He was dearly loved and will be missed by family and friends. He is survived by his son Robert Rule, of Durango, CO; a son John Rule of San Diego; a daughter Sandy Nava of Escondido; son-in-law Nati Nava and a grandson Nick Nava, both firefighters; and a granddaughter Stephanie Nava. Graveside Service will be on Saturday, Sept., 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the "Fireman's Rest", El Camino Memorial Park Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon, Rd. San Diego, 92121. A Celebration of Life will follow the service at Gil's home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Firefighter Aid, 10509 San Diego Mission Rd. Suite F, San Diego, CA 92108. Please put "In memory of Gilbert Rule" on the memo line.
