John B. Knight Jr. Obituary
Knight Jr., John B. 04/06/1947 ~ 08/01/2014 SAN DIEGO -- John Knight, known by "Jack" to his friends, was loved by everyone he met. Jack was born in Geneva, N.Y., where his family lived until moving to California in 1955. They first settled in West Covina, then in 1960 in San Diego, where he attended Collier Junior High, then Point Loma High School. He graduated from San Diego State with a bachelor's degree in business in 1969. Jack, 67, lived in Mission Valley and had a long, successful career in the restaurant business in California and Hawaii. Jack later worked as a manager at Metro Golf in San Diego, and finally in estate sales, where his knowledge of fine art and antiques proved helpful in appraisals. He also enjoyed attending auctions and estate sales in his free time, and loved to talk about his valuable finds. Jack loved to travel and spent time in Washington State, British Columbia, Hawaii, and South America, and throughout the United States. Jack was an avid reader, loved the outdoors, enjoyed hiking, bird watching, biking and especially golf. He spent many evenings on long walks in Mission Hills. He appreciated the quality and craftsmanship of the historical homes and would stop to chat with the owners who would often invite him in for a personal tour, and he befriended many. Jack was an intelligent, kind and compassionate person who believed everyone should be treated equally. He always had a calm demeanor and was a great listener. He was quite the conversationalist and could discuss any subject, whether it was art, sports, politics or news of the day. Jack truly believed in the simplicity of the Boy Scout law and tried to live by it. Jack volunteered as a docent at The Museum of Man, delivered food for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Audubon Society. Jack was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two weeks prior to his death. Jack is survived by his sister, Nancy Knight-Acevedo of San Diego, his brother Timothy W. Knight of Las Vegas, niece Blair Knight of Evergreen, Colo., and brother-in-law Ray Acevedo of San Diego. Jack was taken too soon and will be missed by his family and many friends. A celebration of Jack's life will be held September 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Crone's Cobblestone Cottage B&B in Mission Hills.
