Obituary Condolences

UHLIG, JOHN PAUL July 1, 1913 to February 15, 2013 John Paul Uhlig, 99, residing in Carlsbad, CA, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2013. He was born in St. Charles, MO, on July 1, 1913. He survived three brothers and a sister. He was married to his beloved late wife Ruth for more than 63 years. He held a Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, and both a Ph.D. and a D.D. from California Graduate School of Theology, Fullerton, CA. John was ordained shortly after graduation from Concordia and celebrated the 75th anniversary of his ordination in 2012. He loved being a shepherd to his parishioners serving four different Lutheran congregations: Immanuel, Okawville, IL (7 years); Trinity, Centralia, IL (5 years); Emmanuel, Fresno, CA (9 years); and Redeemer, Redwood City, CA (19 years) before his retirement. He served as Executive Secretary of the California-Nevada District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod from 1958 to 1963, and in a number of other church offices. He also led many tours to the Holy Lands and other Bible lands. In 1998, he and Ruth moved from Redwood City to Carlsbad, CA, to be closer to their only child, Ron and his family. In his retirement, John continued extending God's love to thousands from all walks of life, right up until his death. He is survived by his son Ronald Uhlig of Carlsbad, CA, grandsons John Paul Uhlig II of Seattle, WA, Joshua Uhlig of Oceanside, CA, step-grandson Ronald Thompson, Jr. of Escondido, CA, and grand-daughters Kristin Soifer of St. Louis, MO, and Michelle Edgin-Uhlig of Carlsbad, CA, and by eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Hour. A viewing will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Crippen & Flynn Woodside Chapel, 400 Woodside Rd., Redwood City, CA. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Redwood City followed by committal at Skylawn Cemetery.
