Patricia Hanft Obituary

Hanft, Patricia E. 03/15/1922 ~ 04/13/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Patricia Quigley was born and raised in Duluth, MN. She graduated from Duluth Central High School, class of 1939, and from the University of Minnesota, class of 1943. She was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and maintained her membership her entire life. Her first job out of school was as a ticket agent with Mid- Continent Airlines, which flew short hops between Minneapolis and many other Midwest cities. Pat had great stories to tell about bustling Minneapolis during World War II. Pat returned to Duluth at the conclusion of the war and met and married John Hanft, a fellow Duluthian and high school classmate. They came to California when John was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. In 1954, they moved permanently to San Diego. Pat went to work at the Grossmont Unified School District as an Instructional Aid in 1962. She worked in the district for 29 years, at Mt. Helix, Mt. Miguel and Grossmont High Schools. She was a member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church since its days on College Avenue. Pat was an avid theater goer and sports fan. She and John had season tickets for years to both The Old Globe and The Chargers. She traveled to many places, most notably, The British Isles, Australia, New Zealand, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. She spent a lot of time in the Southwest, visiting the pueblos of New Mexico and the Hopi lands of Arizona. She was a prolific reader, played charades and loved the Padres. She thoroughly enjoyed a good martini and a good laugh. "Here's to fun!" Her husband, John Hanft, passed away in 1995. She is survived by her children, Hilary Hanft of Los Angles, John Hanft (Ellen) of San Francisco and Elizabeth Long (Ralph) of Oakland, her grand- children, Sarah and Jacob Hanft, Ralph III and Spenser Long, and a host of beloved friends. Her family is forever grateful to these caring friends who gave Pat so much love and attention for so many years. Services will be Saturday May 11th at 11AM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6556 Park Ridge Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92120. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Pat's name to The Old Globe Theatre.

Pat was a wonderful member of the Grossmont English staff. Smart, intuitive, and very hip, she was a joy to know.

She was part of the legend in my growing up. The stories my dad told of John and Don and Mac. Pat always kept me up on the goings on from the left coast after the men past. She was a delight always, to be missed for sure but forever in the hearts of all she touched.

Mrs. Hanft was a great neighbor. Always friendly and supportive. She put up with my learning to play the drums two doors down! Thanks Mrs. Hanft for being a part of my great childhood memories. Thoughts and prayers to the family from the Grano's.

John, I was so sorry to hear of your Mothers passing. Her obit was such an insight of what a wonderful person she was. My Mother passes 4 years ago and I know the pain. You are a wonderful son and I know she was so proud of you. God bless you family and Happy Mothers day to you wife Ellen. May the days ahead be full of hope and best wishes for future days of happiness. Love Laura and Mike Huffman

I saw Pat in March while she was staying with her daughter Liz. She had a twinkle in her eye and would have had a skip in her step had it not been for her walker! May her family find comfort in their many memories.

It was an honor to work with Pat. She was so interesting and well informed about a variety of subjects. Pat always reminded me of the of the cigarette and martini generation; hip to what was happening and wise about the past. Bill Gray

Robert and I enjoyed meeting and talking with Pat on her visits to the bay area. She was sharp as a tact and a great conversationalist. We have a fond memory of her being with us for Xmas and making sure she had her GIN martini. Her drive and spirit is an inspiration. She will be missed. Our sympathies go out to the entire family.

I knew Pat when she worked at Grossmont High. She was always pleasant and helpful. I know she was a highly regarded aide in the English Department. I enjoyed seeing her at the retired teachers group when she came with Connie Baer. Please accept my condolences for your loss.
