Sandra Jennie Scholz Obituary
Scholz, Sandra Jennie ESCONDIDO -- Beloved by her family and friends, Sandra "Sandy" Scholz died at age 72 on Saturday, February 22, 2014, attended by family members at her home in Escondido, CA, after a long battle with lung cancer. She was under the competent and compassionate care of The Elizabeth Hospice. Born in 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, to Wanda and Joe Felzer, who moved the family to Los Angeles after WWII, Sandy was strongly influenced by her paternal grandmother, who lived with the family. Sandy graduated from Venice High School in 1958 and married classmate Gene Gritton with whom she had two children, Dennis and Kathy. Her third child, Guy, with husband Steve Atherton, was born in 1972. Sandy worked at secretarial and administrative jobs until finding her joy in working with kids as a physical education instructor at the John Thomas Dye School in the Bel Air area of Los Angeles in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, she moved to San Diego and later continued working with children for 26 years at the Poway Unified School District's Meadowbrook, Black Mountain, and Bernardo Heights schools. She ran the first computer lab for middle school students as a classified employee at Bernardo Heights school and followed the computer revolution until her retirement in 2003. Sandy gained proficiency in playing competitive racquetball for many years, working as a racquetball instructor for a time. She met her third husband of 20 years, Gary Kelley, on the courts. Gary, or "Kelley" as he was known, predeceased her in 2006. With her interest and fine abilities in photography, Sandy developed a sideline business, Kelley's Photography, which specialized in weddings, anniversaries, nature studies, and even a bit of commercial photography. For many years, she provided photo services to the Bernardo Heights 8th grade students enjoying the annual harbor cruise party. She continued this avocation into her retirement years and still did special jobs for close friends and family until just a few years ago. Sandy had a great love of travel, visiting the Caribbean, Europe, Greenland, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, with several trans-Atlantic crossings. She had a special love for and made many trips to the Hawaiian Islands over the years, realizing her "ideal" wedding when she was married barefoot on the beach at sunset on the Big Island to Joseph Scholz in 2005. Sandy is survived by her husband Joseph, children Dennis Gritton (Adrienne), Kathy Romita (Johnny), and Guy Atherton (Angela), brother Jim Felzer (Robbie), along with 7 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a niece and nephew. Sandy was especially devoted to all of her family members and has touched and affected the lives of so many others in her life journey. She had an incredible way of dealing with people of all personality types and created relationships that made people feel welcome and well respected. We will celebrate Sandy's life on Monday, March 17, 2014, with a memorial service at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church at 17010 Pomerado Rd., San Diego, CA 92128. The service will begin at 11 a.m. and a reception will follow. The Neptune Society of San Diego is providing cremation services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to one of Sandy's favorite charities, the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization providing research and clinical trial funds for the treatment of childhood cancer patients. Sandy's interest and support of this charity was sparked by her granddaughter Jordan's fight with and longterm survival of a rare form of childhood cancer since age two, and Jordan's mother Angela's active participation in St. Baldrick's as a volunteer fundraiser.
