Sidney M. Shaw Obituary
Shaw, Sidney M. ENCINITAS -- Sidney M. Shaw, 92, died Wednesday September 11th, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. He passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born November 24th, 1920 in Los Angeles, CA, he moved to Encinitas in 1935. He bought his first car at age 16- a Model A Ford - in 1936 for $110 and graduated from the 1st class of the new San Dieguito Union High School in 1938. Sid was a Naval Officer and Blimp Pilot during WWII. He met his loving wife, LaVerne while stationed near Yuma, AZ. They married on March 22nd, 1944 in Boston, Mass. The Sid & LaVerne Shaw family has owned commercial property on Highway 101 and Second St., Encinitas since 1935. In October of 1946, Sid purchased the family business Surf Cleaners in downtown Encinitas and expanded into Carlsbad & Rancho Santa Fe. Eventually, he purchased many surrounding properties with lifelong friend Bob Grice. Sid formed and was sole owner of Encinitas Land & Cattle Company which he actively managed and maintained with his wife LaVerne until his death. Sid was actively involved in the community and civic affairs serving as President of the Encinitas -Leucadia Chamber of Commerce, founder of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, founding member of DEMA (Downtown Encinitas Merchants Association), and a member of SPARC which drafted the original Downtown Encinitas Specific Plan, and President of Encinitas Business Association. He was a member of the Encinitas Elementary School Board of Trustees for ten years and served as Chairman for five years. Sid was also a member of the Scripps Hospital Encinitas Advisory Board and was actively involved in the fundraising for the expansion of the hospital. Sid is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, LaVerne; daughters, Robin Tworek, Cyd Shaw and Vickie Shaw; grandchildren, Heather O'Sullivan (Michael), April Sisk (Fred), Jeff Lorio (Becky), Scott Lorio (Marci), Michael Shaw (fiancé Allison), Angela Cordero (Marvin) and Kerrianne Peuker (Bill). He has 14 great- grandchildren with one due any minute. Services will be held on Saturday, September 21st at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley (5600 Carroll Canyon Rd. San Diego, CA 92121) Viewing 12-2 p.m. Service/Burial at 2 p.m. Reception immediately following the services from approx. 3-6 p.m. at the Country Inn & Suites Grand Salon located about a block from El Camino Memorial Park at 5975 Lusk Blvd., San Diego, CA 92121. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Scripps Health Foundation - Cancer Research (In Memory of Sidney M. Shaw) by calling 1-800-326-3776.
