Obituary Condolences

CARLIN, VIRGINIA LEE GILLESPIE March 6, 1931 to February 5, 2013 Virginia was born in her grandmother's home in Corinth, Mississippi on March 6, 1931. Her early years were spent criss-crossing the southern states as her father, David Daniel Gillespie Sr., worked in construction building bridges. In the early 1940's Virginia's mother, Jessie Merle Blankenship Gillespie; sisters, Wanda Merle and Betty Carol relocated to the El Cajon Valley where Virginia attended Grossmont High School. Nicknamed "Ginny" by her school friends, she lettered in Tennis and made many life-long friendships. Virginia married Leo Anthony Carlin at St. Mary's Catholic Church in El Cajon, California on July 31, 1949. Early in their married life, Virginia and Leo moved to the rural community of Dehesa Valley, east of El Cajon, and began raising cattle, oat hay and children. Blessed with six children, the Carlin family became actively involved in their community through 4-H and school activities. The heart of the community was Dehesa School where Virginia was involved in the Mother's Club and Dollars for Scholars. Never one to miss an opportunity to have a gathering with family or friends, Virginia was a gracious hostess with a bright smile and welcoming spirit. The center of Virginia's life was her family and there was always sweet iced tea and homemade cookies to come home to. She loved being outdoors - whether it was tending her desert garden or camping at Green Valley Falls and Paso Picacho. Later in life it was just sitting in a chair on the porch enjoying the sunshine. Virginia is survived by her children, Dave (Monica) of El Cajon; Julie of El Cajon; Ray (Debbie) of Irvine, California; Andy (Kristine) of San Luis Obispo, California; Mike (Kristina) of Alpine; and Kevin (Laura) of San Diego; sister Betty (Bub) Ray of Palermo, California and brother Wallace (Penny) Gillespie of Franklin, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Leo; her sister, Wanda Harding Palmer; brother, Dean Gillespie and parents, Jessie Gillespie Edwards and David Gillespie, Sr. A rosary for Virginia, who died of a heart attack, will be held at 4:00 p.m. followed by viewing and visitation from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013 at El Cajon Mortuary, 684 S. Mollison Ave., El Cajon, California. A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Catholic Church of St. Luke, 1980 Hillsdale Rd, El Cajon, California.
