RENE WERNICKE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2010.
WERNICKE, RENE DuWAYNE "Don't mourn my passing, celebrate my life." Rene Wernicke, 76, of San Diego, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on May 10, 2010. Rene was born on September 23, 1933 in Illinois. He received an NROTC scholarship at Thornton High School in Dolton which led him to Purdue University where he enjoyed his Phi Gamma Delta days and received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He went on to be a Naval Carrier Pilot and had a wonderful career with IBM. Rene had a magnetic personality, a contagious zest for life and lived it to the fullest. Rene loved living in beautiful San Diego, loved to sing, dance, travel, buy new cars and new homes! His greatest joy was his family. Rene was a proud husband, father, grandfather and brother to his sweet wife Betty of 53 years, his children Sheryl (Gary), Michelle (Rick) and Greg (Louis-Philippe), brother Don, grandchildren Megan, Mark, Madeline, and Drew and was blessed to be a foster grandpa to Elizabeth. He touched all who knew him and will be greatly missed. We are grateful to the staff in the memory care unit at Belmont Village, Cardiff, at Scripps Encinitas and Elizabeth Hospice. By Rene's wishes, there will be a private family celebration. The family respectfully requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to your favorite children's charity.

How saddened we are to here of Rene's passing! He was a remarkable friend and neighbor. Long past, but always remembered with a warm glow, are the flag football games, weekends in Idyllwild, alternating Christmas sing-a-longs and always admiring Rene's remarkable voice! Rene was so proud of his beautiful family and has influenced so many lives. He will be missed by so many! God Bless your families and keep them safe. We send our love. Bill and Marty Cass

I am sorry for the Wernicke family's extraordinary loss. Rene was always a delight, and my dad thought the world of him. I am so happy that they had an opportunity to visit at the last IBM Reunion at Mission Bay.

I am sorry to hear about Mr. Wernicke's passing. He was my little league coach, and he was always so positive toward us. He taught us, but most of all he made it fun. My condolences to the family. I was friends with Greg. I lived on Cypress Point Road. Oh and the end of little league season pool parties were the best!!!

Rene was the nicest, and the most professional person I ever met in my 20 years at IBM.

When I was young, my wife Louise and I moved from Canada to San Diego. Rene and Betty were the first people to invite us to their home for dinner, and they made us feel very welcome.

Rene was my role model at IBM, and his beautiful family was an inspiration to Louise and I when we started our own family.

Rene and I were a bit unusual at IBM in sales, in that we were both engineers. He taught me a lot that helped me be successful.

My kids loved it when Rene was Santa at the IBM family Christmas parties.

Our whole family is very sad to hear of Rene's passing.

Goodbye Santa.

Rene always gave good advice, and showed me how to do business ethically, but without compromise. Cheers to the Wernicke family...

We are sorry to hear of Rene's passing. He was my closest friend and the nicest guy I have ever known. When I joined the Solar Turbines sales team in 1961 he became my mentor. Soon thereafter, Zana's mother died and we had to attend her funeral in Alabama, Rene and Betty insisted on keeping our new baby. I have fond memories of our close relationship and Saturday's spent on Cottonwood Golf Course. While Rene enjoyed his golf, he specialized in good humor and entertaining everyone while discussing current events. Such a wonderful guy-----we will miss him !
We will be making a donation to Ben's Hope in memory of Rene.

I was Rene's secretary when he was the New Business Marketing Manager for IBM San Diego. What a wonderful time in my life. I cannot put into words what Rene meant to me and how appreciative I am for having been taught by one of the best.

My heart is aching today as I learn of his passing. I will always be thankful for the many years of joy Rene brought to my life and the lessons he taught me.

I love you Rene and will never forget you or your beautiful family. Vaya con Dios, querido amigo, until we meet again.
