Obituary Condolences

ALAMEDA, JULIA L. Oct. 10, 1920 to Dec. 10, 2010 Julia passed away peacefully at her home on December 10, 2010 surrounded by friends and family. She was one of ten children born on the family farm in San Luis Obispo, California to Manuel and Maria Brum, immigrants from Calheta de Nesquim, Pico Island, Azores, Portugal. In 1931 she and her family moved to the La Playa area of Point Loma from San Luis Obispo. In 1941 Julia married George Alameda, a commercial tuna fisherman. They were married for 51 wonderful years until his passing in 1992. While her husband, George, was skippering tuna vessels, Julia was at home raising their family. Julia was a wonderful person, sister, friend, mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Kind and always generous, she enjoyed a fine sense of humor, always with a smiling face, caring for those around her. Julia loved working in her garden tending to her orchids and roses. In 1948 they built the family home on Byron Street in Point Loma where she was blessed with wonderful neighbors in a great community. Julia resided in this same home for 62 years and she loved opening the house to friends and family for holiday gatherings and especially loved hosting parties for the annual Portuguese SES Festival. She volunteered her time at St. Madeleine Sophie's Center in East County in the 1970s helping disabled children. Julia was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church for 75 years. Julia is survived by her three children: Larry and daughter-in-law Kathi of Julian, Kenny and daughter-in-law Kathy of Rancho Santa Fe, and daughter Linda Marie of Irvine; four grandchildren: Scott Alameda, Heather Alameda, Kristen Pruett and husband Blair, and Kevin Alameda; two great-grandchildren: Sarah and Mary Beth Pruett; and many nieces and nephews. Julia was predeceased by her brothers: Manuel, George, Alfred, Larry and John Brum and sisters Velma (Isaacson), Mary (Keays) and Mabel (Azevedo). She is survived by her brother George of San Diego. The family wishes to thank friends, relatives, and neighbors for their love and support over the years and especially the care and friendship provided to Julia by her caregiver, Josefina Lopez. There will be a viewing at Merkley - Mitchell Mortuary (3655 5th Ave., San Diego) on Thursday, December 16th, from the hours of 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A mass will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church at (1140 Evergreen St., Point Loma) on Friday, December 17th, at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to San Diego Hospice (4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103) who provided great compassion and care for Julia during her final days.
