Martinez, Carmen B. SAN DIEGO -- Carmen Martinez (Blanco) was born on February 26, 1927 in La Puente, CA. Like many children during the Great Depression, Carmen was forced to quit school to work in the fields of the San Gabriel Valley. While working for a tailor/dry cleaner she met the love of her life, Pablo Martinez. They were married on Jun 17, 1945 and settled in San Diego; Pablo working for San Diego Gas & Electric and Carmen staying home to raise their family. Her lifetime of public service began when the family move to Barrio Logan, near the Neighborhood House. After receiving assistance from the House,Carmen became a volunteer interpreter, assisting many immigrant families in their pursuit of the American Dream. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Otay Senior Center. A tireless advocate of education, Carmen served on the boards of the Asiatic Information Center, the MAAC Project and founded Organization Femenil. She is survived by her children Betty English, Robert Martinez, Danny Martinez, Dorothy Escoto, Martha Cruz and Lorraine Martinez; who have continued Carmen's Legacy along with her twenty grandchildren and twenty-two great- grandchildren/ Services will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park, 4300 Imperial Ave. Saturday May 31,2014 at 10:00 a.m. For more great stories about Carmen visit: greenwoodsandiego.com
