Deane Haskins

Deane Haskins January 13, 1930 - December 27, 2017 La Jolla Our father Deane Haskins was an energetic, fun dad of five children. Deane was well-spoken, well-informed, open-minded and optimistic. He was an avid reader of history, biographies and detective novels, and loved jazz and classical music. He was an enthusiastic tennis player and a Chargers fan. Originally from Abington, Massachusetts, Deane graduated from Harvard with a degree in history in 1951. As a Navy Lieutenant during the Korean War, he met his first wife, our mother Dolores DuCharme, at a USO dance in San Diego. After their wedding, they moved back to Boston while Deane attended Harvard Law School. In 1959, Deane opened his law office in La Jolla, and happily practiced real estate law for the next 56 years. He was an active member/president of the Town Council and Kiwanis Club in the 60s and 70s. Ever friendly, Deane whistled and greeted friends and strangers alike on his daily walks around town. A lifelong musician, Deane played tenor and baritone sax in big bands throughout college and in San Diego, including the Herb Pomeroy Orchestra and the Hal Crook band. Deane and his second wife, Virginia, enjoyed their children and their weekend home in Cantamar, in Baja. Deane and his third wife, Nena Jo, lived in Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch until their divorce in 2013. In his final years, he lived with his son Steve in La Jolla. Deane died peacefully at the La Jolla VA hospital. He is survived by his children: Mark of Encinitas, Steve of La Jolla, Elena of Sebastopol, and Marion and Jemma (Susan) of Maui, and five grandchildren.
