Two older brothers were Calvin and Harold. The family resided in Groton, South Dakota where Ralph attended school, through high school. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated in 1959 having majored in History and minored in Mathematics. He earned his Master's Degree at San Diego State University. He married Mary Ellen De-Vries in 1956 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and their first daughter, Sharon, was born there. Upon graduation, Ralph accepted a teaching position with the San Diego City Schools where he taught math for several years, then transferring to Patrick Henry High School, again teaching math, and retired from teaching in 1991.
