WINBIGLER, LEON F. Leon F. Winbigler, 86, passed away on January 18, 2013. He was born February 1, 1926 in Brookfield, Missouri. He attended Seven Oaks grade school and Central High school in Kansas City, MO. After military service he graduated from the University of Missouri, where he was the drum major. Upon graduation, he entered the management training at The Jones Store in Kansas City, one of Mercantile Stores Co. Department Stores. He was with the company for 41 years. He was chairman and CEO from 1974 thru 1989 at their headquarters in New York City. It was through his vision and leadership that Mercantile Stores became the "Gem" of the retail industry. It was later sold to the Dillard's Company. His entire adult life he was an avid tennis player and golfer, and his other joy was his love of music. At one point he sang the Star Spangled Banner at the University of Missouri homecoming game. He has been a member of the Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, N.J. since 1982. He was also a member of Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and The Citrus Club in La Quinta, CA. Mr. Winbigler and his wife moved to Rancho Santa Fe from Kiawah Island, S.C. fourteen years ago. He also enjoyed being a "Californian". He made many wonderful friends throughout his life and always enjoyed people. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Winbigler, his son, David Winbigler and daughter-in-law Kim who reside in Annapolis, Maryland; granddaughter, Audrey Winbigler and grandson, Davis Winbigler; brothers, Bill Winbigler of Kansas City and wife Virginia and Carl Winbigler of Houston TX; stepson Ryan Hurst of Boulder, CO. and stepdaughter, Hillary Hurst Schwarz and husband Mark of Dallas, TX. Services will be held at The Church Of The Nativity at 6309 El Apajo, Rancho Santa Fe at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 24th.
