MATTAROCCI, FRANK Frank Peter Mattarocci, a California Rugby legend, peacefully died on January 13, 2013. Son of Frank and Hope Mattarocci, he was born in Lime, Colorado on November 8, 1931. He joined the Navy in 1949 served during the Korean conflict, attended San Diego Junior College, and graduated from Cal Berkeley in 1958. Frank had a distinguished and diverse career. He was a war hero, accomplished football and rugby star, a lifeguard and director of beach tranquility, professional football player, restaurateur, owner of Poncho's Sedate Supper Club and Presidential Limousine. A member of Kappa Sigma, Frank was a pioneer in establishing rugby in San Diego. He was a political activist, a producer of the first AFL All-Star game, coach, announcer, salesman, military instructor and professional gambler. His many awards included a Navy commendation for saving the lives of three shipmates on the USS Boxer, Junior College Most Valuable Football player, Captain of Cal's rugby team, Cal's Brick Muller Outstanding Lineman Award in 1956 and Iron Man Football Award. Frank married Roberta Montgomery in 1961. They were divorced in 1975. He is survived by their three children - Sherilyn Haug (Paul) of St. Charles, MO, Marcia Shields of San Diego, and Michael Mattarocci (Stacy) of Austin, Texas.
