PELICAN, PATRICIA C. Aug. 10, 1952 to Feb. 19, 2013 Pat passed away peacefully at her home after an 11-month battle against pancreatic cancer. She came into this world on August 10, 1952 in Teaneck, N.J., the fourth child of seven born to Otto J. "Joe" and Josephine Pelican. She grew up in New Milford, N.J. and obtained her BSN degree from William Paterson State University in 1974. In 1976 Pat moved to San Diego, where she worked as a nurse at several institutions before joining the VA Medical Center in 1978 as a nurse on the Medical-Surgical floor. She subsequently served as a Home Health Nurse and then as Discharge Planner and held the latter position when she retired in November 2012. While at the VA, she earned her MSN degree from the University of San Diego in 1983. During her 34 years at the VA Medical Center, she helped hundreds if not thousands of patients and their families and earned the love and respect of many others, including other nurses, physicians, hospital staff and nursing students. She always did her best to live up to the highest standards of her profession, and her patients' health, safety and comfort were always her primary mission. Family was important to Pat and she was devoted to and cared for her parents after they moved to San Diego in 1978 until their deaths, and her aunts Frances and Madeline, who also lived in the area. Pat is survived by her husband, Paul Jurkoic, their daughter Sarah, her stepchildren Jeremy, Keri, Nick and Jennifer, grandchildren Michael, Jacob, Benjamin, Hailey and Joshua, her sisters Florence and Barbara, and her brothers Robert, John, Richard and Frank. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 6628 Santa Isabel Street, Carlsbad, CA 92009 at 11:00 a.m. on March 23, 2013. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 or to The Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest Street, Escondido, CA 92025.
