Dick Brown Obituary
Brown, Dick SAN DIEGO -- Much loved and charming husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Dick passed away on July 19, 2013, at his home. He was born, under a harvest moon, to HC and Bessie Loel Brown, in Chillicothe, Ohio, on August 26, 1932. He graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He was stationed at Fort Lewis with the 9th Infantry 11th Regiment and transferred to Alaska and served with the Yukon Command. In the summer of 1957, he met his sweetheart Sandy Jones on a blind date at The Ohio State University. He and his love were married at the Dublin Community Church in Dublin, Ohio, on August 15, 1958. He received his bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University in December 1959. In 1960, Dick and Sandy tent camped their way from Ohio to San Diego to pursue their teaching careers. Dick taught American Literature and Journalism and was advisor to the school newspapers at Hoover, Kearny, Mission Bay and University City high schools. He received the California Newspaper Publishers Association Journalism Educator Award for recognition of outstanding contributions to journalism education. He was an active participant in the young lives of his children Jenny and Steve, spending afternoons after school shooting hoops in the driveway, and most summer days either at the La Jolla Cove or camping in the National Parks throughout the western United States. Recent adventures included a trip to Maui with Sandy and a family reunion in Lake Tahoe in 2011. He cherished his two granddaughters to no end - their mention made his eyes sparkle. He was a lifetime member of The Ohio State Alumni Association, volunteered for 10 years at the Scripps Hospital Cardiac Treatment Center, and he and his late wife Sandy were longtime active members of the Church of the Good Samaritan. Dick is survived by his son Steve (Kristen - Lake Tahoe), daughter Jenny Leavitt (Eugene, OR), granddaughters Hannah Brown and Arcata Leavitt, sister Josephine Bostwick, brothers Howard (Sonny) and Donald Brown and many dear friends. A Celebration of Dick's Life will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at the Church of the Good Samaritan, 4321 Eastgate Mall, San Diego, 858-458-1501. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Dick's memory to the Church of the Good Samaritan.
