Vanderpoel, Elizabeth 07/15/1911 ~ 08/12/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Elizabeth Alkire Vanderpoel died peacefully in her home on August 12th and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at the age of 102. She was a remarkable woman, both in mind and in her Christian faith. She was born in Columbus, OH, the daughter of Howard and Agatha Alkire. Elizabeth attended Roosevelt Jr. High in San Diego, The Bishop's School in La Jolla, CA and Columbus School for Girls in Ohio. She attended college at Mount Holyoke in South Hadley, MA. There she received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in History and Political Science. Afterwards she taught at Fryeburg Academy in Maine and later was Asst. Headmistress at Greenwood School in Ruxton, MD. After teaching, Elizabeth entered the 2nd class of the newly formed Navy WAVES in October 1942. She was stationed at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego and the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C., and held the rank of Lt. Cdr. She met her husband Chaplain George E. Vanderpoel in San Diego, and they were married in 1947. During her husband's military career they were stationed in Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Texas, Hawaii, Arizona, San Diego and Panama. Elizabeth enjoyed reading mysteries, biographies, and English/ Medieval history. She loved everything Scottish. She played the piano and organ and volunteered with the American Red Cross, various libraries and at Grossmont Hospital. She faithfully attended New Life PCA and its weekly Seniors Bible study. Elizabeth is survived by her three children and their spouses; Peter Vanderpoel (Marcia), David Vanderpoel (Cyndi) and Deborah Creedon (Jack); seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, George and her brother Robert. A memorial service will be held on October 12th, at 11:00 a.m, at New Life Presbyterian Church, 5333 Lake Murray Blvd, La Mesa, CA, 91942. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
