Phyllis Hinshaw Obituary

Hinshaw, Phyllis Anne SAN DIEGO -- Phyllis passed away in her home in San Diego on Friday, August 22, 2014, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 77 years young. Phyllis was born June 11, 1937, in Long Beach, California, to a young Navy couple, Earl and Mabel Hartselle. The family moved to China for three years before being evacuated back to California at the outbreak of WWII. The family lived in San Diego mostly with a short move to New Mexico and back. After graduating from Point Loma High School, Phyllis went on to work for Bank of America. This served her well when her husband was drafted into the Army. The couple then moved up to Northern California where she continued to work for Bank of America in Sacramento. She was then transferred back to San Diego with her husband when the Army tour was completed. They built their home in Del Cerro, were blessed with two boys and were active in the community. Phyllis served as President of the Del Cerro Junior Woman's Club, President of the College Gardens Republican Woman's Club, and Superintendent of their family church Sunday school. After her divorce in 1969, she began working at Cubic Corporation coordinating government contracts. In 1971, she married Robert (Bob) Hinshaw and they combined their two families into one and raised four children together. By now Phyllis was working as a staff clerk for Pacific Bell, she then transferred to Service Rep for residential customers and also worked in sales in the Phone Center. Lastly, Phyllis worked in the Home Office Group designing telephone systems for customers doing business in their homes. In the meantime she earned her real estate license, sold property part-time and also became a licensed pilot. In 1990, she entered the University of Redlands "After Hours Program" and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, June 1995. Having retired from Pacific Bell the year before, she then started her own collections business doing what she called her most exciting job, that of collecting from attorneys who neglected to pay their expert witnesses. She and her husband Bob served the community working together on many projects such as the Lion's Club Mike Morrow Baseball Tournament, and the Telco Retirees Association, he as the Treasurer and she as the Database Coordinator. She also served as Treasurer and President of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization), Treasurer and President of NCRWF (Navajo Canyon Republican Women's Federated), Old Globe Administrative, RIPs (Really Important People) and a proud member of her Bunco card playing group for many years. Phyllis' life was not all work. Over the years she enjoyed flying with the family around the country, cruising around the world visiting every continent, being a member of the "100+ Books a Year Club", and baking thousands of her famous Christmas Cookies. Phyllis is survived by her son Mike Tartar and his wife Anita; son Chris Tartar, his wife Michelle and their daughter Dominique; son William "Ken" Hinshaw and his wife Sally and their son Jake, daughter Maddie Goett, and her husband Peter; daughter Holly Shaw, her husband Tom and children Bret and Hanna Colman, Kirsten and Kellie Shaw; brother David Allaire, his wife Jackie, their daughters Danielle, Nicole Arnold and her husband Cameron and their daughter Kyla. A Private Ceremony for the family will be held to scatter Phyllis' ashes at sea. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Admiral Kidd Club with the date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Apreva Hospice or to P.E.O. International, (headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa) which promotes educational opportunities for women.

Mike and Chris,
Words can not convey the sympathy I feel for you. Your Mom was a great lady and I always loved hanging out at your house. The holidays at your house on Airoso were the best, and those cookies....
I haven't forgot her all these years since high school and she will live in my memory, along with my mom.
