Humberto "Bert" Cabanas May 3, 1930 - May 3, 2017 El Cajon - Humberto "Bert" Cabanas passed away May 3rd after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Bert attended Hoover High School. He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. After leaving the Army he married Claudia Bryan and started a long career at United Parcel Service and graduated from San Diego State University. Bert was predeceased by his wife Claudia and son Mark. He is survived by his sisters Lydia Lewis and Maria Long (Steven), daughter Debra (Sara), son Michael, grandson Brandon Cabanas and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his longtime companion Judith Morgan and her family. Donations in his memory can be sent to the Magic Horse Therapeutic Riding Center,14512 Willow Rd., Lakeside, CA 92040. Services will be held Saturday, May 13th, 10:00am at East County Mortuary, 374 Magnolia Ave., El Cajon, eastcountymortuary.com. Reception to follow.

It is always great to reflect back on the life of our loved ones that have passed and remember the blessings along the way. It is comforting to know that our loved ones are no longer suffering. To Judy, Jodi, Mike, John and Julie-- always remember the blessings.

Kind and gentle man. He loved his "new" family-- Judy Cabanas-- her three children Jody, John, & Julie as well as his step-grandson, Michael. I, as well as his family know that Heaven is a bit sweeter now that he is there.

To Judy Cabanas, Jody, Julie, John, Frank and Michael: Always remember, when God wants an angel home we here on earth are to celebrate that the angel is in a far more beautiful place than here on earth. Take solace in the fact that you were so very fortunate to share God's angel for so many years. Bert would want all of you to stay strong in your lives. As said before, Bert is now an "angel on your shoulder"-- travel with care.

Uncle Bert was a sweet, kind and caring man. He and my Dad were best buds and it was always entertaining to watch the two of them together. They always had fun, whether traveling together or just sitting around watching football. Through the years they shared a remarkable bond. Even during the last few months of my Dad's life, when Uncle Bert didn't remember many people, he always remembered my Dad and it was so heart warming to see his smile and twinkle in his eye when my Dad would walk into the room.

To his devoted and loving wife, Judi, my thoughts and love are with you, Julie, John and the rest of the family that loved my Uncle so much. It is hard to remember a time that the two of you weren't together. For over 30 years you were by his side, through good times and scary times. While you may not have been officially married for many years, you both lived and demonstrated those sacred vows of loving each other through sickness and health, through good and bad, forsaking all others until the day you were parted.

While Uncle Bert may be physically gone, his spirit will live on with you through the many years of love and memories that you and those of us who truly loved him share.

Dearest Judy,

Take solace as you and your children, Bert's stepchildren, grieve ... you were a wonderful caring and loving wife to Bert these many past years. You and your children brought such joy to Bert ... we know how much he treasured you and his step children, Julie, Jody and John and his step grandchild Michael.

Bert and Joseph were life long friends, a friendship that began at Memorial Jr. High School, and continued at Hoover High School, when Joseph and Bert lived just a block apart and had many great "adventures" together.

Bert will remain in our hearts forever.
