Alfonso Oseguera Obituary

La Familia Oseguera regrets to announce the death of Colonel Alfonso Oseguera, USMC Ret. Alfonso was born in April 1930 in Montrose, Calif., and slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in Arroyo Grande. He was the fourth of 10 children born to Jesus and Braulia Oseguera. In 1947, Alfonso was so proud to be presented with the Eagle Scout Medal. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1947 as a seaman recruit. Called to active duty during the Korean War, Alfonso served as a Seabee until he entered Naval Flight Training at NAS Pensacola, Fla., in 1954. In 1955, as a USMC 2nd Lt. and Naval Aviator, he was assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 332, MCAS Opa Lacka at Miami, Fla., where he flew the Douglas AD-6 Skyraider. Following a 15-month tour in Iwakuni, Japan, he was transferred to MCAS at Cherry Point, N.C., where he flew the C 999 "Flying Boxcars" with Marine Transport Squadron 252. In 1962, he was transferred to NAS Pensacola, Fla., as a flight instructor, followed by his attendance at UCLA, where he earned a BS in Geology. In September 1965, he served as the Industrial Relations Officer at Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, until assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 224 at Chu Lai, RVN in July 1966. Upon his return to the Continental U.S. in 1966, he joined the Marine Air Reserve Training Detachment at Twin Cities, Minn., as the Operations Officer. Alfonso then returned to Chu Lai Airbase in 1968, where he served as the Executive Officer Marine Attack Squadron 121; Maintenance Officer, Marine Attack Squadron 211; and as Chu Lai Airbases Services Officer. Assigned to MCAS at El Toro, Calif., in 1969, he served as the Aviation Safety Officer to Marine Aircraft Group 33. He later served as Executive Officer of Marine Attack Squadron 214 (Black Sheep Squadron) and as Commanding Officer, Marine Attack Squadron 223 (Bull Dog Squadron). Alfonso transferred to Quantico, Va., in 1972, where he completed the Marine Corps Command and Staff College then returned to MCAS El Toro, where he served on the MCAS Staff. In 1974, Alfonso became the Executive Officer of MCAS in Yuma, Ariz. While at Yuma, and during off duty hours, he earned his master's degree in Education from Pepperdine University. In 1976, he was transferred to the First Marine Aircraft Wing in Okinawa, Japan, as the Wing Intelligence Officer. Upon his return to the Continental U.S. in 1977, Col. Oseguera became the Assistant, and later, the first Director of Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity at MCDEC at Quantico, Va. Col. Oseguera retired from the US Marine Corps in 1980 after 33 years of military service. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and two Bronze Star Medals with Combat V device, 27 Awards of the Air Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon and Presidential Unit Citation; he was proudest of his Purple Heart. Col. Oseguera flew 407 fixed wing combat missions in his two combat tours in South East Asia. Alfonso was a man who enjoyed a variety of things '? one of his biggest passions was searching for the yellow metal, gold. He even went to the Yukon to find his payload. In 1994, he began to teach on a regular basis as a substitute teacher in the Santa Bonita School District in Santa Maria. He also visited the local schools during the lessons about the Gold Rush Period. With his pans and a few gold nuggets, he taught the students how to find gold and pan for it. When schools had "vocation" days, he would dress in his flight suit, pressure suit and helmet and regale the children with the tales of his flying exploits and taught them what it takes to become a pilot of jet aircraft! In 2010, Col. Oseguera was inducted into the John Muir Hall of Fame in Pasadena, Calif. Col. Oseguera was an extraordinary man. He was a faithful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Most of all, he was one tough Marine, Semper Fi! He was loved and respected by all who knew him, especially those in military circles. He will be greatly missed. Col. Oseguera is survived by his wife, Col. Marie Oseguera; daughters Kristie Daniels, Michelle Nielson and Lori Kelley; sisters Amparo Balbuena, Mary E. Frias and Rosa Lopez; brothers Benjamin and David. and half brother, Salvador Oseguera; and countless nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Mary, Teresa, Natalia and Richard. Visitation to be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with the recitation of the rosary at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Los Osos Valley Mortuary in Los Osos. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at St Patrick's Catholic Church, 501 Fair Oaks in Arroyo Grande, followed by internment at Los Osos Valley Memorial Park in Los Osos. It´s been 10 years since you were taken from us yet it still seems so recent.

A lot has happened since that day. There are now 5 great grandchildren, 3 boys and 2 girls. They and their parents and grandparent, Kristie, are doing well! Sean got married and his wife is taking flying lessons. And Andres carries your photo with him when he flies. He now has his pilot license!! You would be proud!

We all miss you so much, your insight, jokes and sense of fun. You are always in thought and prayers. And loved so much.
I´ll always miss you.
Your Doña Maria

It´s 9 years already since you left us. They say it gets easier with time. It doesn´t. Sometimes it gets harder. You are missed as much to day as you were that awful day , 11August 2013. This year you were joined by two brothers, David and Salvador. I hope you are all looking after your sister as it has been very difficult for her too especially this year. We miss all of you and I miss you especially. Love, Doña Maria.

It has now been 8 years since your death. Everyone tells me it gets better in time. It does not. The depth of the loss is as fresh as it was the Sunday Morning I got the call at 7:11 AM telling me I was now a widow. These past 8 years have been hard. Your absence is felt every day and you are missed more than you or anyone could ever understand. You were my heart and you always will be the love of my life.
Forever yours,
Doña Maria

I first met Mr. O when I was a young lad playing among the new homes being built in a suburb of Orange County called Lake Forest.
I had cut my hand and we as proceeding to make it home when this man saw me and took me into his home. He cleaned my hand and called my mom who promptly gave me the 3rd degree as to why this behavior was not exceptable. The rest would be history as Michelle would soon become best friends with my sister Debbie. My mother was very found of Al as well. And over the years had stayed in contact with him as well.
Throughout my life I always looked up to this man like a father. Although I didn't have much time with him he left a great impact in my life and I surely own a dept of gratitude to him.
I'm sorry this is late coming but I've realized that I need to let people know that there were and are some awesome human beings on this earth and to not completely discount what anyone says or does until they see for themselves what's up. Don't judge people.. give them a chance as or savior Jesus did many times over.

Dearest Ozzie,
On the 9th August, 3 years after your last admission to hospital , there was a ceremony at the Vets Hall in San Luis Obispo,CA at which time the names of seven members of the Det were read. Your name along with 4 others was engraved on a brass plate. Lou Barnes name was on the wall too. It was a short ceremony but very nice. You were remembered by many members who were there. But no one misses you more than I and never a day goes by that I don't think of you.

Alfonso ( no middle initial) Oseguera was the best gift God gave me, in addition to my parents, brothers and 3 girls and 8 grandkids and the extended Oseguera family. He endured his health hardships with dignity, cooperation, and grace. To lose him is a terrible thing but his last take off down the runway of life was a blessing as he was spared many future hardships and his health declined. He and I thank all his friends and family for the love and support during this time. For my part, I will always miss him though I know he is near in spirit and will find some way to guide me as I sort out the future.

I regret that too often I learn more about my Marine Corps League friends after they pass on than when I knew them. Colonel Oseguera was always friendly, cordial even. I knew, as only a Marine could know, that he was a leader and I respected him.
