Cora Higdon, 55-year resident of Arroyo Grande, died peacefully Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. Born Cora Maria Lilla in 1917 in Sleepy Eye, Minn., she spent her growing-up years on a farm in North Dakota with three brothers and two sisters. In 1945, Cora married Tom Higdon in Lincoln, Neb., and they settled in California. Cora was active at St. Patrick''s Church in Arroyo Grande and immersed herself in local political activism. She also worked side-by-side with her husband in his brick mason business. Known for her love of gardening and deft hand with pie baking, Cora shared the results with friends, family and strangers. In her 70s, she was a volunteer at Arroyo Grande Care Center, where she lived her last six years enjoying the same care and concern she once dispensed there. Cora is survived by her son, Jim Higdon (Kathy) of Ridgecrest, Calif.; daughter, Mary Giambalvo of Arroyo Grande; grandchildren Cara, Jason, Tom, Nick and Tara; and great-granddaughter, Shea Hazarian. Numerous nieces and nephews mourn her passing, as well as extended family Marianne and Ken Lehr, Jennifer Valencia and family; Kristen Lehr; and Joe and Cindy Giambalvo. She was predeceased in 1988 by husband, Tom after 43 years of marriage; and grandson, Christopher Giambalvo in 1987. There will be a life celebration for family and friends at a later date, to be announced. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Arroyo Grande Cemetery.
