Arthur Chapman Obituary

Arthur Joseph "Art" Chapman was born in 1946 in Vallejo, Calif., and passed away suddenly of a heart attack while on his morning walk Monday, April 9, 2012. Art was Professor Emeritus at Cal Poly, where he taught for 37 years in the Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. In his long career at Cal Poly, Art taught introductory and advanced classes in computer-aided design, building science and design studio, and played a pivotal faculty role in the architecture graduate program. In addition to serving a term as Architecture Associate Department Head, Art held multiple leadership positions within the university, including Director of Instructional Computing and Operations, Director of Computer-Aided Productivity Center and Director of Cal Poly Academic Mainframe Specialty Center. As emeritus and part of the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP), Art continued to team-teach with his friends and colleagues Professors Howard Weisenthal and Jim Bagnall. In 1986, Art founded the Cal Poly Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) with another longtime friend and colleague, Jens Pohl. In 1994, Art and Jens founded CDM Technologies, Inc. in San Luis Obispo, which was recently acquired by the Boeing Corporation and merged with its subsidiary, Tapestry Solutions. From 1994 to 2010, Art served as President of CDM. After the acquisition by Tapestry, Art agreed to continue in a leadership role and served as Senior Director of Tapestry Technical (IT) Services. Tapestry Solutions San Luis Obispo currently employs over 100 people and provides software development services to military and commercial customers. Art grew up in Reno, Nev., and the San Francisco Bay Area, where he attended St. Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif. He received his undergraduate degrees in Architecture and Mathematics from Cal Poly in 1970 and earned his master''s degree in Computer Science from Penn State in 1972. After graduate school, Art worked for architectural firms in in New York and Los Angeles before his return to San Luis to begin his teaching career at Cal Poly. Art modeled the importance of treating others with kindness and care at all times and served as a mentor, teacher, and guide to many people, in a variety of communities nearby and far away. He believed one of his most important roles in life was to facilitate, build and maintain relationships with others, and he did this with exceptional talent. He lived life with energy and enthusiasm that he readily shared with others. Art was a person who thought with his heart as well as his mind, and has left his spirit in his surviving wife of 43 years, Danielle; and two daughters Karen and Jennifer; extended family of students, colleagues, and friends; breakfast group of retired architecture professors, with whom he shared an understanding of the relationship between artistic work and community; and all of the dear companions who followed alongside his path at work and in life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Breckinridge and Josephine Tafoya Chapman; and brother, Steve Peluffo. Viewing will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2012, at Reis Family Mortuary, 991 Nipomo St. in San Luis Obispo. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church, 221 Daly St. in San Luis Obispo, with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Art''s honor to the Cal Poly Newman Center http://www.slonewman.org; or to a charity of your choice. Reis Family Mortuary 544-7400 San Luis Obispo

HsiaoYen and I just learned about this sad news from a dear friend of ours in SLO. I fondly remember Art as a highly capable and dedicated young teacher when I was there at the school as a department head in the early 80's. For a time Art helped me and the department with the enormous administrative task of managing the teaching assignments for what was one of the largest faculty of a department on campus at that time. We were all grateful to him for his extraordinary analytic and management skills. His lifetime accomplishments in the following years were extremely impressive and exemplary both as an academician and a professional. I am glad to have known him.

Hsiao Yen and I pass along our sincere condolences to the Art Chapman Family for your great loss.

Ray and HsiaoYen Yeh, University of Hawaii, Honolulu.

Art and Jim Bagnall taught my second year architecture design studio. My first class at Cal Poly. His explosive happiness and winning smile were so infectious. I enjoyed his class so much I signed up for his studio again later in the year when he taught with Howard. I managed to get an intern position at his company and started to work as his student aid, helping him teach CAD at Cal Poly. Art had a way with people that was so candid, so honest, that you felt as if you had always been a part of his immediate family.

In 2008, he offered me a staff position at his company. My wife worked as an accounting assistant for him for many years as well...In short, my family and I wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for Art.

Arthur Chapman was the kindest, most generous person I have ever known...and likely ever will know. If there is a God in heaven...without a doubt, my friend and mentor has a special place right by his side.

We miss you Art...

Around 1984 I met Art, Danielle and their daughters Karen and Jennifer. We discovered we had common ground ...good old Cal Poly school of architectire. As a Cal Poly school of architecture graduate class of 69 I had many good talks with Art. We talked the architecture talk and how we were in it for delivering, passing on and mentoring the architecture message. In time of need Art fitted me into a part time teaching Job at Cal Poly teaching second year design and professional practice. Years later Art would stop by my house when I was in my front yard on his road bicycle just to say a " happy hi " as he was on his way to Cal Poly and yes we did talk the architecture talk ... What fun ... I will miss you Art and I know you are in heaven right beside the father our lord watching over your family, students and friends ...god bless you Danielle, Karen and Jennifer... Art is in my memories for life ...

I knew Art during the time we spent together with Father Charlie at the Newman Center in 1966-67. Although we both went our separate ways after the "Summer of Love," over the years I would run into him at Cal Poly or on the street in SLO town. He always had a kind word to say, was one smart guy and really nice, had the warmest smile. His spirit will be missed.

Art was an exceptional man. He was truly the nicest and most compassionate man I think I have ever met. His contributions to Tapestry in the short amount of time he was with us are irreplaceable. He will be truly missed.

So saddened by the untimely passing of Art Chapman. One of my favorite professors at Cal Poly who helped usher me into the digital age with knowledge, generosity and humor. I enjoyed learning under Art in both the undergraduate as well as the graduate programs.
