Henry Engen Obituary

Henry Engen, 74, well-known Paso Robles and Atascadero community member, entered into rest after a courageous eight year battle with Alzheimer''s Disease Sunday, July 19, 2009, in Templeton. Henry was born in Detroit, Mich., in 1934 to Norwegian immigrant parents, John and Inger Engen. He graduated with honors from Cooley High School in Detroit, then spent a short time in the U.S. Army. He attended Michigan State University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laud having earned his bachelor''s degree in Urban Planning. Henry''s well forecasted and planned communities span from Michigan to Arizona and California. He contributed to the groundwork for many communities'' general and master plans, providing a solid base for planned sustainable growth for future generations. Henry was also a lecturer at Cal Poly in the School of Architecture and Environmental Design. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling with his wife, Sandra. They were fortunate enough to travel to both European and domestic destinations. Henry was active in the Democratic Party and liked a lively debate. He had run for Atascadero City Council after retiring as Community Development Director to try and remain engaged in the city''s future. He was an active community member contributing to the Atascadero Historical Society, the United Way, Loaves and Fishes, Rotary Club and many other organizations. Henry will be deeply missed by his wife of 51 years, Sandra J. Engen; two daughters Leslie (John) Hite of Templeton and Alison Engen of Atascadero; and grandchildren Rebecca and Peter Hite. In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Henry was a true gentleman and the best father in-law that I could have asked for. Very intelligent and quick witted. My sympathies go out to Sandra, Alison and Leslie. I know Henry is now enjoying a beer and rooting for the Michigan State Spartans and every time I crack a beer or see the Spartans playing I will remember Henry with love.

He was my friend. We had many many Discussions and we often disagreed, but he was my friend. Good poker parties.

Sandi and Family, it's over! It is a blessed passing, and I know how you feel. Chuck has been gone for two years the 10th of July, and I still miss him so much. I am so glad to have met you and Henry, thanks to EOC. The whole adventure was sad, happy, very educational and the wonderful people in the same place help each other to keep their heads above water. God will watch over him now! Much love and sympathy to you. Helen Frazier, Aurora, Co.

Henry was a great friend when I was growing up. I remember running around his house with his daughter Alison. Enjoying the hot tub and eating all of their corn pops. My prayers are with the family. Stacy George

Henry Engen was our friend for 55 years. As we mature we grow to realize that true friendship, next to the love of our immediate family, is the most precious possesion we can have in this world.

We loved Henry! We loved him for all the wonderful qualities he exhibited and shared with us through the last half century. I worked side by side with him and he was the consumate professional- talented, honest with his employers, forthright with the public in a field that was not always easy to be. He had the quickest mind of anyone I ever knew. His sense of humor was legendary. He cared , really cared, for the cause of social and political justice and the needs of those less fortunate who have fallen through the cracks of our society. His Love for Sandy and his daughters was powerful and complete.

Henry was one of those very special people, who, if his life touched yours, made your life richer than any worldly goods could. Rest easy friend, You were well loved and will be sorely missed.
