Lowell "Bud" Huston, was born in Santa Ana, Calif., in March 1922, and died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Wyndham Residence in Arroyo Grande, where he had been living for the past six years. His wedding to Mary Aikin, at the age of 19, took place two weeks before Pearl Harbor. Since he had already been working at North American Aviation, which was building up rapidly to meet military aircraft demands, he was classified as "essential." He went into the military service later during World War II, where he served as a U.S. Army Lieutenant in the Philippine Islands. The couple's first of five sons, Mike, was born while he was deployed overseas. Upon his return, Bud was given his old job back at NAA and he soon worked for Rockwell International. He served as a manufacturing project manager for the Saturn-Apollo engine (the one that put men on the moon), the Saturn IV booster engine and the Space Shuttle main engine. During retirement in San Luis Obispo, he and Mary visited 26 countries, including China the year before the Tiananmen Square Massacre. He was also a Presbyterian Church elder and building chairman. Bud's wife Mary died five years ago on the eve of their 66th anniversary. Bud is survived by his sons Mike Huston (Paula) of Arroyo Grande; Bill Huston (Janet) of Tustin, Calif.; Andy Huston of Atascadero; Marty Huston of Pella, Iowa; and Dave Huston (Adrienne) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Bud's funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1301 Osos St. in San Luis Obispo, with a reception following at the church. Cards for the family can be sent to Los Osos Valley Memorial Park, P.O. Box 6190, Los Osos, CA 93402. Donations in Bud's name can be made to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast.
