Alden Eugene Fogo

Alden Eugene Fogo was born in September 1920, and died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2013. He was born was born to Stacia and George Fogo in the same house as his mother. He and his sister, Alice, were raised in the small farm house about four miles west of Richland, Wis. His father, George, was of Scottish descent.His mother, Stasia, was of German descent.They were originally farm folk but later engaged in other vocations. Alden graduated with honors and also completed medical school at the University of Wisconsin. He joined the U.S. Army as Captain in the Medical Corps. He served two years in the U.S., and one year in Germany during the period of occupation after World War II. Following this, he completed training in the specialty of Otolaryngology at the University of Illinois Medical School, and thereafter confined his work to that specialty. On August 18, 1951, Alden married Louroe Schmid. He practiced medicine for two years in Madison, Wis., then in 1953, the newlyweds relocated to California. While living on their ranch in Santa Margarita, he raised and trained quarter horses and enjoyed equestrian activities. Al was the first one from the area to complete the Tevis Cup endurance ride. This ride required the horseman to ride 100 miles from Lake Tahoe to Auburn on the same horse within 24 hours. During Al and Lou''s 21 years in Santa Margarita, they adopted two children, Carrie Louise and John Carl. In 1975, Al and Lou moved to San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club, where Al made many friends and spent his days playing golf - he retired in 1982. During his practice, Alden served as Chief of Staff at the San Luis Obispo County Hospital and Sierra Vista Hospital. He also served on the board of the San Luis Obispo County Medical Society and the hospital staff boards for several years. Al was a longstanding member of the San Luis Obispo Rotary Club, served as President of the San Luis Obispo Riding and Roping Club, The Caballeros de San Luis Obispo and the San Luis Golf and Country Club. He was an active member of the boards of these organizations for several years and formed many close friendships throughout his years with them. He also taught English as a Second Language to families of his community. He was a longstanding member and ordained elder at First Presbyterian Church. Alden is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louroe; daughter, Carrie Louise Fogo-Bledsoe of San Jose, Calif.; son, John Carl Fogo of Reno, Nev.; granddaughter Amber Jasmine Fogo-Rodrigues of San Jose; and great-grandchildren Mason and Amelia Rodrigues of Los Gatos, Calif. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at the Los Osos Valley Mortuary Chapel in Los Osos. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, Morro at Marsh Sts. in San Luis Obispo.
