Thomas Gerald Cahill M.D.

Thomas Gerald Cahill, M.D., was born in Detroit in August 1944, and passed peacefully after a two-year battle with cancer Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at his home. He was the son of Dr. William and Alice Cahill. The family moved to California when Tom was four, and he grew up in the Los Angeles area. After graduation from San Gabriel Mission High School he went to UCSB, where he met his future wife, Virginia "Jinny" Galbraith. While at UCSB, he was a founding member and president of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Tom attended the California College of Medicine at UC Irvine, and graduated in 1970. Daughter Jenna was born in 1969, while Tom was in med school. Taking advantage of the opportunity to spend a year in Hawaii, the family moved to Honolulu, where Tom interned at St. Francis Hospital. After that he entered the U.S. Navy and spent three years as a physician at the Pearl Harbor Naval Station, where son Scott was born in 1973. During his tour of duty on a cable-laying ship, he saved a sailor's life and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. His love for Hawaii led him to open a family practice in Aiea, on Oahu. He was very active in the medical community, where he served as president of the Honolulu County Medical Society, president of the Hawaii Academy of Family Physicians and for several years was one of the Hawaii delegates to the American Academy of Family Physicians' annual meetings. In 1985, Tom, Jinny, Jenna and Scott moved back to the mainland and settled in Morro Bay to be near Tom's parents. That same year he started to work at Atascadero State Hospital, where he worked for 29 years, ultimately appointed Medical Director. Tom's faith and his family were the most important. He thought of the ASH community as his second family. When he spoke of ASH, it was always to highlight the accomplishments of the hospital or his peers. Tom would have wanted all of you to know how much he appreciated, respected and cared for you. In addition to Jinny, his wife of 46 years, Tom is survived by his daughter, Jenna Walsh (Bryan) and their children Emma, Katie Rose and Nathan, all of Bakersfield; and son, Scott of Morro Bay. Also surviving Tom is his brother, William (Fran) of Long Beach, Calif.; sisters Mary Romero (Al) and Alice Cahill (Don Henderson) of Morro Bay; 10 nieces and nephews; and 15 great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Alice Cahill. The Episcopal service of Burial of the Dead will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 962 Piney Way in Morro Bay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to: St. Peter's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church (www.stpetersmorrobay.org); Morro Bay Pups (www.morrobaypups.org); or Woods Humane Society (www.woodshumanesociety.org). Interment at Cayucos Cemetery will be private. May Tom's soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
