William Callaway Obituary

William F. "Wild Bill" Callaway III, 68, was born in San Luis Obispo to Elvina (Mazza) and William F. "Cab" Callaway Sr., and passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 24, 2011, with his family by his side. Bill was the fourth generation of the original Callaway family that settled in the Irish Hills, and fifth generation of the Swiss-Italian Mazza family that settled on the Leland Terrace Hill in San Luis. He loved fire engines from the time he could speak. Every time he heard a siren, he would run to the window of his home over-looking San Luis and look for the smoke. As he grew older, he would jump on his bike and ride down to Station No. 1 on Pismo St. to see how he could "help out" the firefighters. They usually gave him some small task to keep him busy. In 1961, Bill''s dream became a reality when the City of San Luis Obispo hired him as a firefighter. Bill was the youngest man in the state of California to have been hired by a city fire department. In 1965, Bill was promoted to the rank of Fire Captain, and retired as the rank of a Battalion Chief. He was also the acting interim Fire Chief several times for the City of San Luis Obispo. Bill was always negotiating with the city for the benefits and rights of his fellow Firefighters. He was a devoted and active member even after he retired with the California State Firemen''s Association, where he taught contract negotiations to many other Firefighters. He attended State Firemen''s conferences to work to improve fire personnel rights and benefits. Bill led numerous strike teams and fought wildland fires as well as some historic fires in our county. Bill was an entrepreneur and originator of Candy Cane Lane Christmas Trees, Wild Bill''s Western B.B.Q., and Wild Billy Wong''s Restaurant. He catered for over 35 years for many organizations along with weddings, anniversaries, funerals and political parties. Bill was active in the Moose, Eagles, and Exchange clubs and held the office of Governor for the SLO Moose lodge. He was active with his children in F.F.A. and Edna 4-H clubs, and spent many hours assisting the judges and kids with their animals at the Mid-State Fair. Bill had a heart of gold and always helped people in need. Whether it was money, food, work, or a place to stay, he always found a way to help out. Bill is survived by his two children, Shawn and Katie Chaney (Ray); four grandchildren Sierra, Derrik, Autumn and Emily; brother, Robert "Bob;" and nephew, Bobby Callaway. Viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a vigil service Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, at Reis Family Mortuary Chapel, 991 Nipomo St. in San Luis Obispo. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday August 4, 2011, at the Old Mission Church. A Fireman''s processional will follow to the burial at San Luis Cemetery, with a reception in conclusion. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Bill''s name to the Seagrave Restoration Account, "The History Center of SLO County," 696 Monterey St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401; or your favorite charity. Oh the stories I could tell.....and not tell.I first met Bill back in the late 70s.My car broke down in SLO one early morning.I was with a couple other crew members heading home.We were pushing the car into the old Rexall parking lot (trying to anyway). The next thing I know, some curly haired guy came up honking the horn and asking if we needed help.Long story short,he helped us move the car, insisted we ride with him and he'd take us home. After he found out we were all CDF guys,he took us to his house and cooked breafast and insisted we stay until the next morning (of course it was already the next morning).I woke the next day,no one home a note saying help yourself to anything I needed. That started many years of friendship and memories.I miss the good times, the back and forth agency sparring, the fires we were on together, the training assignments together, the awesome BBQs,but I am always and forever going to miss him the most.Bill-I love ya man ! Deepest condolences to the families and all his friends and co workers. What a great service for an awesome man.Rick Calkins.

Shawn and Katie, our hearts and prayers are with you. We can be comforted by the fact that your dad is in heaven right now looking down and being very proud of you both. His family was the most important thing to him in his life. Your dad made getting a Christmas tree for all of us, an "experience" and you have carried on the tradition like no one else could. We often recall the BBQ 15 years ago, that was able to continue on for over 250 at our folks 50th wedding aniversary when the entire western united states was without power. With a little generator and a little wood on the fire, he fed and we entertained all of them into the night, had a blast, and can't forget it. He was there to the bitter end that night. Your dad was one of a kind but more importantly, he was one that WAS kind. He was a resource to so many and did it quietly. We offer our condolences to you and the rest of the family. He and Cricket are having a lot of fun togther right now telling stories and laughing and figuring out some practical joke to play on you. We will miss him and thank you for sharing him with us. May God Bless him and keep him. He was a good person and he left his mark on our community in so many ways. Rest in peace Bill. Our condolences . The Bill Thoma Family.

From times spent at the fire station, BBQ's, New Year's Eve parties, pool parties and birthday's. Spence and Callawy spent many years together as partners at work and play. I went to school with both Bill and Bob Callaway and both my grandchildren worked for him out at the Christmas tree lot in years past. I was saddened to hear of his passing, he was a really wonderful man. My condolences go out to his family, I know they will always miss him.

Bill was my Fire Captain in the mid-70's; I will always remember him by his nickname of "Mother Callaway", especially for his Saturday morning meals at Fire Station 1. He was a great guy and the epitomy of a Captain in the Fire Service. Our sympathies to his family; Bill will be missed. Al & Roberta Fonzi.

Bill said he didn't know if he believed in God or not but he took Christmas trees to Mission San Antonio every year for their service as "insurance". One year Brian Garris and I flocked the trees for him to deliver early the next morning. We also flocked his pickup and turned on the wipers so it looked like he had been in a blizzard. It froze that night and the water lines at the car wash burst and Santa went to the mission in his snow covered sleigh. Bill didn't speak to us for hours after he returned. I have many great memories. May God bless those he left.

Bill was a great supporter when I ran for Sheriff in SLO County. Gave a lot of himself and never asked for anything in return. Was really shocked to find that he had passed.

Bill was the first Battalion Chief I worked for at SLOFD. He was iconic, colorful, bigger than life, and had a heart of gold. He always put the public's best interest first, and served them well for a lifetime. I will miss the heavily seasoned evening meals he always prepared for the crew at Station 1, and the stories of old San Luis. Thanks for all you taught us, Bill. My wife and I will miss you.

Bill was such a big part of our Christmas tradition. He helped us pick out the perfect tree every year, and delivered it. Loved the apricot brandy we would share and stories of SLO. Candy Cane Lane Higuera/ Nipomo. My girls thought he was the next best thing to Santa Claus. The tree was always my Christmas. Also enjoyed his meals at the Moose and Catering he did when I was a Wedding Planner. You will be missed and remembered for your humor.

Bill was a terrific guy and role model for other firefighters. He helped me during fire science classes at Allan Hancock College. RIP
