Betty Carminati Obituary

Our dear wife, mother and friend, Betty June Cass Carminati, 83, passed on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, in Templeton. Born to Alta and Hank Cass in 1927, Betty was a direct descendent of Captain James Cass, who established Cayucos in the 1870s, and Henry Veach, one of the early residents of Bradley. She spent most of her early years in Bradley and Pacific Grove, Calif., until she met Waldo Carminati. That was the beginning of a true love story that spanned over six decades. Betty was a people person, who was always there for family and friends. Her caring and loving character endeared her to everyone. She had quite a humorous side too. Her favorite outing was the annual family reunion at Easter. No one could possibly compete with her skits and outfits, and card games, especially Pedro, were taken seriously - she played them with gusto. For 25 years, she was a staple at the California Mid-State Fair, where she made hamburgers for the masses. It was said that many fairgoers went to the fair only to purchase a hamburger at the Burger Barn (and her recipe for her secret sauce was never revealed). Her other endeavors included the Big Orange in Bradley, the Tumbleweed in Paso Robles and a stint as a telephone operator at Camp Roberts. We will cherish many warm and fun memories of Mom - she made us smile and was our best friend. Betty is survived by her husband, Waldo Carminati; two daughters Nanci Bernard and Cindy Wittstrom (Karl); grandchildren Randy Bernard (Cameo), Tami Bernard Nicholas, Chad Wittstom (Olivia), Amanda Wittstrom Higgins (Sam) and Heidi Wittstrom Sill (Joseph); and great-grandchildren Priscilla Bernard, Alexandra Bernard, Ryan Perryman, Grace Wittstrom, Cody Sill, Macoy Sill, Bronson Nicholas and Heston Nicholas. We will honor her at a service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at the Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, 1703 Spring St. in Paso Robles, with a celebration of her life to follow at the Home Economics building at the Paso Robles Event Center. Every year dad would take his vacation from the Boys School to be the Head of Security for the San Luis Obispo County Fair. Every day I would get up at 6am and go to the fair with dad, not to return home till after midnight. Every Fair, there would be Waldo and Betty and every time we saw them I was reminded of what good friends dad had in them and what wonderful people they are. Losing dad in 1972 was one of the hardest things in my hard life and this brings it all back, I am reminded that there are not enough people like that around anymore and to be one myself. Godspeed to Betty and be sure to tell dad hi for me.. it was so good to have known you both. All our love to Waldo, Nanci and Cindy in this time of loss, let us know if there is anything we can do..

A loving lady who always had open arms for me during the good and bad times. I will always remember Waldo and Betty's house being open to me and regardless of Waldo's complaints, Betty always had a place at her dinner table for me. Waldo, Nancy, Cindy and all the family, I join you in your loss. May the memories of a very special lady, help to temper the grief you are experiencing.

Dear Nanci, Waldo and Cindy--The notice of your mom's passing in today's paper brought back many fond memories. I can still savor the big spagetti feed that she and Waldo shared with Ronnie, Wes and myself on more than one occasion. Waldo, you were the happiest-go-luck guy I've ever met. I doubt if you ever met a stranger. Keep smiling! Cindy, I remember us trying to hook you up with my younger brother Bill when you were still in elementary school. Lot's of good memories. Barbara and I share in your sorrow but relish the fond memories of a wonderful lady and her family.
