Daniel Mele Obituary

Daniel Anthony Mele, of San Luis Obispo was taken to God Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010. He was born in Lawrence, Mass., in June 1922, one of 13 children. In 1942, he was inducted in the U.S. Army. During his training at Camp San Luis, he met Georgina Silva at a USO dance. Dan left to serve in the Pacific, where he participated in the battles for Tararua and Pelelu. He and six of his brothers had served in World War II - all returned. After the War, he returned to San Luis and married Georgina. Dan was employed by the Harmony Valley Creamery, which became Foremost Creamery. He was later employed as a groundsman for the San Luis Obispo Unified School District and retired in 1984. For many years, Dan was active in the SLO County Historical Society, Elks Club and American Legion. Many mornings were spent with the Sunshine Boys, a local group of mutual friends, and many happy hours were spent playing golf and cooking over an open pit for friends and local civic groups. All of his life, Dan strove to make the world a better place for those less fortunate then himself. Always in his mind was his humble childhood upbringing and being thankful for his life. He will be most remembered by his loving wife, Georgina; son, Bryon (Amira); grandson, Tony (Shanelle); great-grandson, Cyrus; brothers Frank (Barbara) and Freddy (Terry); brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Ruth Silva and their son, David. A service will be held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Reis Family Mortuary Chapel, 990 Nipomo in San Luis Obispo.

Dear Georgina and Byron. Marty and I are sad to hear about Dan. We always enjoyed talking to him and you, Georgina, when we would see you together downtown. I have such a busy week that I will just be "thinking" of you on the day of his service. I'm glad that I got to talk to you recently, Byron.
Much love, Virginia (and Marty).

Dan, you were "Uncle Dan" when I was a kid. You were best of friends with my folks and they really appreciated your friendship. I always thought you were the "best", and you always treated us kids (whatever our age) with respect and kindness.
Take care and rest in peace old buddy.

Georgie... we are so sad to hear the news. Dan was always Ernie's best bud and you have always been the greatest friends of my family. There was never a nicer guy. We didn't get to fish enough! RIP, Dan.

Dear Georgina and family,
Was sorry to read about Dan's passing. I did talk to you in July, in Cayucos, and saw Dan, but did not get to talk to him. Also, talked to Donald and Ruth.
All of you are in my thoughts and may Dan rest in peace.

I worked throughout high school and college from 1972-75 with Dan as a groundsman for the SLUSD. He was always laughing and telling stories that made us all laugh! Little did I know that I would retire from the Army and have my military service in common with him!

My condolences to Dan's family. May he rest in peace!

I was sad to hear of Dan's passing, he shared many laughs and happy times with our group. You never knew what the next trick would be. But he always made us smile.
Georgina, the days will be darker for you now, but I am sure that Dan is shining his bright light on you. Thank you for sharing this fine man with so many of us.
