David P. Carey, 58, of Atascadero passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born in March 1955 in San Luis Obispo to John and Freda Carey. David graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1973 and Cal Poly in 1977. Following his father's footsteps, he was employed by the California Men's Colony for 32 years. He retired as Associate Warden. David had many friends and family, who he cherished. He enjoyed participating in softball, hunting, camping, fishing, barbecuing, cutting and delivering wood (he specialized in eradicating diseased oak trees.), and was a life long Dodgers fan. One of his greatest joys was being a member of the Caballeros. Having been a past president, he was involved in bartending and always looked forward to the annual trail ride. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, taking many cruises and floating on his private lake in Wisconsin. David is survived by his wife, Debra; children Jake (Jenny) and Natalie; stepchildren Jeff (Crystal) and Cynthia; nephew, Jeffrey; siblings, Dan (Barbara), Dale and Darlene (Larry); and mother, Freda Carey Betschart. He was preceded in death by his father, John; and sister, Janice. Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at St. Williams Catholic Church, 6410 Santa Lucia in Atascadero, with interment at Pine Mountain Cemetery.
