Delphina Silveira Obituary

Delphina (Perry) Silveira, 99, of San Luis Obispo, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at a care facility in Templeton. She was born in May 1911 to Jose and Filemina Pereira (shortened to Perry) in San Luis Obispo County. Delphina was born into a Portuguese family from the Azorean Islands, the third and last of her eight brothers and sisters, who settled in the Toro Creek area and were dairy farmers. Delfina met and married Joseph Silveira while he was working for her father on the farm - they were married for 63 years. Shortly after they married, they moved to San Luis Obispo and had one daughter, Joanne. Delphina''s family is known for the start, contribution and continuation, in the United States, of the Portuguese Celebration in Cayucos and I.D.E.S. Council 106. This tradition has been carried out with her daughter, two grandsons, Troy and Steven Wisberg, and three great-granddaughters Rebeccah Sherburne, Alexandria Wisberg and Shaelynn Wisberg. Delphina and Joe had dairy farms around San Luis Obispo, including the historic octagon barn on South Higuera. She also worked for Shadowline in San Luis, and later retired from working at Cal Poly after 10 years of service as a custodian. Delphina is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Silveira) Erickson; two grandsons Troy (Christina) Wisberg and Steven (April) Wisberg; five great-grandchildren Rebeccah (Chris) Sherburne, Alexandria Wisberg, Christian Wisberg, Andrew Nicholes and Shaelynn Wisberg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; parents; two sisters; five brothers; and three sisters in-law. A service for Delphina will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Reis Family Mortuary, 991 Nipomo in San Luis Obispo, followed by burial at the Old Mission Cemetery. A celebration of her life will follow at the Elks Lodge, 222 Elks Lodge Lane, also in San Luis. Donations made to the charity of your choice. Reis Family Mortuary 544-7400 San Luis Obispo
