Eugene Dowty Obituary

Gene Dowty, beloved husband of Rosalie, passed away after a brief illness Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at home. Gene was born in San Francisco in 1922 and grew up in Redwood City, Belden/Feather River (Plumas County), the Salinas Valley, Lompoc and Santa Maria, then lived in San Luis Obispo from the end of the War until present. His formal education was done at Santa Maria High School, Allan Hancock College, Cal State Universities and UCLA. Gene, a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Marines on Okinawa. He enjoyed a long working career as both an expert mechanic and teacher with the State Division of Highways, Department of Corrections and later, at Cal Poly and American Airlines at the San Luis Obispo Airport. Being the loving father that he was, teaching and giving of himself were his greatest attributes. The People''s Kitchen will miss the creole red beans and rice he furnished regularly. Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosalie; son, Steven of Santa Barbara; daughters Sharon Connors and Joanne Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren Mariette Dowty of Santa Barbara, and Scott Connors, Alexandra Smith and Lauren Smith of Atlanta; son-in-law, Chris Connors; and daughter-in-law, Dee Duncan of Santa Barbara. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Reis Family Mortuary, 991 Nipomo in San Luis Obispo. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Old Mission Church. To The Dowty Family.
My deepest/sincerest regards at this time of your loss. I first met Gene back in 1985 when I joined the Wings West family. I never got to know Gene real well, but he always had a kind word whenever he came to Los Angeles (Terminal 3) or when I would see him at SBP. He was also well represented by his daughter Joanne.
My prayers for you, are that God will continue to bless you and provide the grace necessary to carry you. Find your strength in knowing you were greatly loved by this man and in time you will see him again.

Mrs. Dowty and family, I was lucky enough to meet Gene at work with American Eagle. His warm glow and easy going nature always made it a pleasure to run into him. What strikes me is that he never forgot me and always greeted me with kindness, sincerity and humbleness. He will not be easily forgotten. My thoughts are with you all.

We are all so sad to hear of Uncle Gene's passing. Sadly, just as with his brother, the WORLD will never know just how much they have lost, but WE who have known and loved them certainly will! The lives they shared with us have made us better people, and have given us the strength to continue on without them, and to reach out to others as they did. For now, we weep with you in your loss, and look forward to the time when "Death will be brought to nothing" (1 Corinthians 15:26). Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Much love from the Marshall family.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Gene was a very kind and wonderful man and I am proud to have known him and been able to share some time with him while working at WW/AE.

Mrs. Dowty, Joanne and family: Thoughtful, kind, and giving are just a few of the attributes that come to mind when I think about "Mr. Dowty."We've lost another great example of "the Greatest Generation." We pray that the Lord who is full of compassion and comfort will be your strength through this time.
