George Ward Obituary

George R. Ward Jr. M.D., 76, passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, in the company of his wife and son-in-law at his home in San Luis Obispo. He was born to Dorothy and George R. Ward Sr., in Plainfield, N.J., in April 1934.  After having served as an NCO in the U.S. Army Infantry, he earned his B.A. in Zoology from Swarthmore College, B.S. in Medicine and M.S. in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, and his M.D. from Northwestern University Medical School. George held concurrent medical specialty board certifications in Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Internal Medicine. In 1972, he began to practice General, Thoracic, and Vascular surgery in San Luis Obispo. Later, he expanded his practice to include Internal Medicine. Outside of his medical practice, George was active with a number of professional organizations as well as community involvements, including a long association with the Boy Scouts of America, past president of the SLO County Sheriff''s Advisory Council, member of the SLO County Sheriff''s Posse, past member of the Board of Directors of Kiwanis de Tolosa Chapter, past member of the board of the SLO County Medical Association, and past committee chairman at Bishop Peak 4-H. In addition, George was active with Caballeros de San Luis Obispo, Order of Minor Historians (C.L. Sonnichsen Chapter), SLO County Historical Society, Elks Lodge No. 322, the Morro Bay Board of Exchange, and de la Guerra y Pacheco Chapter 1.5, E. Clampus Vitus. George was devoted to the well-being of his patients and friends and never hesitated to give his time and effort to ensure the best possible care. He appreciated and admired the unique talents of all people, and proved to be a good friend to many - and he could be counted on to tell a joke to fit any occasion. George is survived by his wife of 38 years, E. Jane Ward; their children Cara, Christopher, Mary, David, and Mark; daughter-in-law, Leslie Ward; son-in-law, David Zwarg; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and eldest son, Christopher. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the San Luis Obispo American Legion Hall. Hors d''oeuvres will be served. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Boy Scouts of America.

A fun, funny MD to work with. I assisted him in surgery many times. Hard to believe he,s been gone that many years.

I am shocked almost beyond words, especially as I just heard: Too late for the service. I don't know where we will ever find a doctor and man like him. Above all, as a doctor, he was patient: Not rushed and harried like the rest. When I ran out of my complaints he would regale me with the best stories and worst jokes I have ever heard. I too was one of his "interesting" patients. He dove in with great thoroughness and enthusiasm. We hit it off from the first day I saw him as a "walk in". God bless his soul and keep the family.

Jane and Family, We will miss him so! A one of kind man and physician. I remember him when he was a powerful doctor and a peaceful man, struggling with his health. I learned about compasion and bravery. He loved his wife, Jane, his family and his patients. Selfless and galant; one of kind. Dr. George; happy trails to you, tell my Dad 'Hi' for me when you see him in heaven. Mechell, Guillermo, Brandon and all your friends at BrightStar

To the Ward family please accept my sincere condolences.
George was a unique individual, with a wonderful personality, and the best storyteller I know. He could always be counted on to make us laugh. But he was much more. He was a responsible & caring physician, with a great bedside manner.
San Luis Obispo will have to look hard to find another like him.

Jane and Family,
George came into our life through Boy Scouts "Wood Badge". He made us laugh until we cried. When I needed a friend he was there. We are so glad and honored to have been apart of his life. Love, Andrea & Emil Mesko

Dear Jane and Family - I too am saddened to hear of your loss. I have many fond memories from far back. My favorites are visiting your home on Luneta when I was very young and then keeping that connection after you moved as I babysat the kids. I loved your new house with the great yard (for hide and seek). I will always treasure the loving kindness which you all gave me whenever I was with you. May the Lord bless and keep you and give you His peace. jackie Loper

GW and I became friends in 2004 when he took me on as "an interesting case". Under his diagnosis and care, my illness was cured and every six months I would walk-in for my follow-up. Our friendship grew with emails and long talks and visits, and before long GW and I were sharing our lives. He loved to laugh, he loved to fight the good fight, and he loved his family and friends. My heart and prayers go out to his friends and family as we will all miss him dearly. I know that on my passing GW will pull me aside and want to review my "interesting case". I love you GW.

Jane-- My heart goes out to you and your family. George was, indeed, one of a kind and his loss feels like the end of an era. He wasn't just someone I worked with over the years, he was a friend. I will miss him.

We remember a very nice family that lived on Luneta Drive. Our daughter, Jackie remembers the tarantula that George kept in a cage in the house and it crawling up her arm. Kathy (Mom) didn't like that. Bill, also, remembers the wonderful times working together with the scouts. George gave the scouts their physicals. Love to all the family. The Lopers who still live on Luneta.

My family and I will always remember George's passion for Scouting. Lots of fun around the camp fire in Sequoia and great joke telling. He would make noises like a bear outside the boys' tents on the Sierra camp outs.George was a fine leader and example to the scouts. My heartfelt condolences to Jane and family.

I had the honor of working with George as a fellow physician and also as a member of the Order of Minor Historians. He was always a pleasure to talk to, full of wit and stories of the past history of SLO. I will greatly miss him and extend my sincere condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences to Jane and Dr. Ward's entire family. One measure of the goodness of Doc Ward's heart was his concern that his professional colleagues and medical institutions share his high ethical standards. He didn't just think this way... he acted on his belief. Humanity was his patient. I first met him when he arrived at the weekly newspaper New Times with a large file on a local hospital matter he thought needed public discussion. That was the first of many important news articles he helped generate. He was honest, kind, caring. He was an asset to our community.

To The Ward Family,
Thanks for sharing this wonderful man with the rest of our community. Dr. Ward was not only my physician but my friend. I always knew he had my best interest in mind. He was kind, caring and a wealth of information. How many doctors these days give their patients their home number, just incase they needed him. He is definately one of a kind. I know his patients, family, and friends will miss him dearly.

Dr. Ward was a wonderful man and a terrific doctor. I had the great pleasure to have worked with him and learned so much from him. Ill think of you often Doctor Ward. Sincerly,

I am remembering, with much fondness, George and your family. While working for him, I learned much about the field of Cardiovascular & Thorasic Surgery, but much more about the wonderful Doctor he was. He was a great technician and cared deeply about his patients. With often a funny story or joke to lighten very serious situations. Jane you both made me feel a part of your family. Please accept our love and sympathy. ~ David & Lisa Rodgers

My sincere condolences to Jane and the rest of the Ward Clan. We're all going to miss George very much. He was a physician to many and a friend to a great many more. His considerable intellect and formal medical demeanor paired well with a zest for life that could come only from someone who descends from the Emerald Isle. So requiescat in pace, Jorge -- the don't refrigerate the Guinness in Heaven...
