Gudrun Grell Obituary

For Gugrun Grell, breath has ceased, but her life remains as an enrichment to those who knew her and those who did not through her many generous endowments. Born in Denmark in 1907, her mother, the famous opera singer of the Royal Danish Opera, Margarethe Boeck Lendrop and father, Dr. Otto Lendrop, Gundrun became an actress in Copenhagen. Traveling to Paris to pursue her theatrical career, she met and fell in love with Guidvad "John" Grell. World War II kept them apart for 10 years with no exchange of letters until the War ended. One telephone call from Sweden to Paris brought happiness and marriage. Gundrun left her family and country to live in Paris, New York and Martha''s Vineyard, Mass., with John. She traded the property on the Island for sunny California and moved to Halcyon in San Luis Obispo County. From theatrics to farming was quite a step, but her favorite saying was, "Life is full of a number of things, all interesting if we lend them our mind and energy." Gudrun was "Mama" in "I Remember Mama" at the Pasadena Playhouse Theater in the 1950s. Many of you will remember her as the "Christmas Tree Lady," and the "New Zealand Spinach Lady." She was proud to have used the term "organic" long before it became a household word. She planted, tended and later sold avacados at the San Luis Obispo Farmer''s Market. Gudrun was adventurous and traveled worldwide. She was an author and linguist, and wrote books and theater plays in four languages about love and travels. She was the lady philanthropist who gave priceless paintings the the Clark Center. The Grell Salon, named after her, holds these paintings. She also gave the property in Oceano, for the thriving Co-House Community. A memorial service for this marvelous lady will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at the University Center, 3171 Temple in Halcyon - Bring your memories and stories to share. Gudrun, you are missed.

Tierra Nueva Cohousing would probably not have existed without her. She left us a wonderful heritage (not to mention avocados), for which I bless her memory. Eva Hayward-George, Renton, WA (formerly of Tierra Nueva Cohousing)

Mrs. Grell was a wonderful person. My X-mother-in-law worked for her, packaging the organic spinach for many years. I remember that one of her customers for the spinach was the late actor Robert Cummings. On one of her trips to New Zealand, Mrs. Grell brought me back a collector spoon. She had great stories and a great life. May she rest in peace.

I never met Gudrun but of course remember the Christmas trees as I grew up right around the corner, and have heard of the many wonderful gifts she gave. She sounds like a very wonderful woman and I am sure she will missed by many.

For Gudrun Grell, in loving memory, from Christa Bowlin.
It was a great privilege to have had Gudrun as one of my dearest friends for more than 50 years. Death ends life, but it does not end a relationship. Gudrun has now returned to the tranquil womb of Mother Earth whom she loved so much. She will also remain in my heart and I will always miss her. Many years ago Gudrun said to my husband Hap and myself, "You are my family in America".
Gudrun was a great lady, a writer, an actress and organic farming pioneer. She represented wisdom, generosity, and integrity. She gave freely to friends and worthy causes, enriching many both spiritually and materially. We valued her greatly and now we are denied her presence.
Gudrun believed in reincarnation. I think she would like to say the following to her many, many friends:
Do not be sad and weep
I am not gone nor do I sleep
I am in all the winds that blow
I am in the sun's rays upon the living earth
I am the blossoming flowers after the rain
I am in the rush of birds in flight
I am in the stars in the firmament at night
So do not cry, I am not gone, I did not die.

Dearest Gudrun, I look forward to seeing you again.
With much love, Christa
