Jack Applegate Obituary

Jack Applegate, 63, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at his home in Los Osos. He was born in Lewellan, Neb., to Ivan and Dorothy Applegate, one of three children. He was raised in Nebraska and graduated from Lodgepole High School. In 1966, Jack married Carolyn Fraass and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He began his service in Vietnam (1966 to 1967), where, amongst others, he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze star for his heroic actions. Jack felt honored to be a Vietnam veteran and always took great pride in his country. He valued his family and friends and his family was very proud of him. He worked as a machinist at Paris Precision in Paso Robles for 15 years. Jack became the happy father of two children, Jay and Dawn. After Dawn moved to California, Jack and Carolyn moved to Los Osos in 1991. Shortly afterward, his first grandson, Michael Applegate, came to California and became like a son to him. He was also grandfather to Dak Owens (with whom he was thankful to have recently shared a special experience), granddaughter, Dari and grandsons Dexton and Devan. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. "Grandpa Jack" will always be remembered, greatly missed and forever loved by his family and friends. Jack is survived by his wife, Carolyn; mother, Dorothy Applegate; siblings Marion and Bill Applegate; son, Jay; daughter, Dawn Owens (David); and five grandchildren Michael (Kat), Dak, Dari, Dexton and Devan; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ivan. A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at Los Osos Valley Mortuary, 2260 Los Osos Valley Road in Los Osos. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Jack''s honor to the Ride-On Transportation for Veterans, (805) 541-8747, or the Lung Cancer Society.

I am so grateful for the time we had together this summer. It meant a lot to me when we shared the journey up the hill to visit dad. Tell him hi for me, love and miss you both. Love from your sister, Micki.

Jack will always dwell in my memories as one of the most outstanding soldiers I knew during my 24 years service in the U.S. Army. Jack defeated the Viet Cong and saved the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. In addition to being an outstanding leader, he was an exceptionally tough and highly effective infantryman, although he never took personal credit for the great work he did. Words cannot express the awe and respect I have had and will always have for Jack! He was one of the greatest soldiers ever to serve in the U.S. Army.

We are so sorry to hear about your family's loss. Our family remembers Dean from the "good 'ol days" back in Lexington, NE. Dean and Carolyn were wonderful neighbors to my family. I remember Dean to be very nice, caring, patient and loving yet very quiet natured. Dawn & I had so many wonderful child hood memories on Jefferson St. I remember playing in the street in the gutters after we had a nice rain. I remember this like it was yesterday. I thank our parents (the Applegates, the Gartons & my parents) for the unconditional love, kindness and "family oriented" life style that they showed to us as kids. My parents, Tom and Emily Hernandez wanted me to let all of the family know that we are all thinking of you and our thoughts & prayers will be with you during this very difficult time. With love, Shawn Anderson (Hernandez) & family, Tom & Emily Hernandez
