Jerome F. Forster, 79, of Santa Ynez, Calif., passed away peacefully Monday, Dec, 17, 2012, at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif. Jerry was born in February 1933 to Hugo A. and Marie (Errecarte) Forster. He grew up and attended school in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. He attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, before following a family tradition of cattle ranching, which continued throughout his lifetime. Jerry was a fifth generation Californian and owned and operated ranches in San Juan Capistrano, Paso Robles, Ione and Maxwell, Calif. He could fix anything with baling wire and string and could move any heavy object with a six-foot long iron bar. He loved the land and he loved his country. Jerry loved competing in western equestrian competitions with his faithful horse, Tucker. He looked forward to the first week of May every year, as this was the annual trek of the Rancheros Visitadores, which he was a member of for 43 years. He also liked to travel in his motor coach and showed his street rod at automobile car club events. Jerry was one of the original founders and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Amador in Amador County, Calif. He was a pillar of and contributor to the communities he lived in. Jerry married Rosemary Walker in San Juan Capistrano in 1951. In 1993, Jerry married Jan Grant of Laguna Niguel. He is survived by his wife, Jan, of Santa Ynez; sons David (Patria), Daniel (Donna), Thomas (Dana), Richard (Laurie) and Hugh (Judi); 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters Karen Bilden (Wade) and Sheryl Duncan; six step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death was his son John Forster. A private graveside service for the family will be held Thursday morning, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Jerry''s life at 1 p.m. later that day at the Santa Ynez Equestrian Center, 195 North Refugio Road in Santa Ynez (Turn right on Mesa Verde and it will be the third driveway on the left). In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerry''s name would be appreciated to the Alzheimer''s Association. Loper Funeral Chapel 688-6684 Solvang, Calif.
