John Alexander Obituary

John Alexander Alexander 7/21/17-3/2/17 John Alexander Alexander, 99, inventor, engineer, builder and scientist, passed away peacefully in his home in Cayucos, California, March 3, 2017. He was surrounded by his wife Carol, family and friends. John was born in 1917 to John Alexander and Janet (Bush) Alexander in Cleveland Ohio. The Alexander family moved to California when John was seven. A born entrepreneur, at age 15, he hired out of work men to clean bricks at a penny apiece. From an early age, the outdoors appealed to John and he was an accomplished hunter and fisherman. He earned a civil engineering degree at U.C. Berkeley. At that time he was recruited to be one of the original officers in the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) by their founder Ben Moreell. In 1942, John married Vara "Midge" Riggs before being deployed to the South Pacific and the Aleutian Islands during World War II. After the war, he returned to California where he started his family and his construction company, John A Alexander Construction. He went on to pioneer the technique of the tilt-up concrete construction, still widely used throughout the industry. In 1965, John moved his family to a ranch in Cayucos where he raised black angus cattle and started a successful abalone farm. John's wife, "Midge," passed away in 1985. Mr. Alexander was an outspoken environmentalist who spent years developing and implementing industrial water purification systems and was often sought after to speak and advise on the subject. It was through one of these talks that John met Carol Bonnette. Inseparable from this point on, they were married in 1993. Together they enjoyed hosting family and friends at their home and traveling the world. John is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughters, Patricia Alexander and Gaye Eck (Steve); his stepchildren, Tom Bonnette (Ofelia), Paul Bonnette (Karen) and Karen Naumu (Richard); his grandchildren, John Alexander Readick, Bonnie Eck and Nora Mason (Mike). John is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grand children; his sister Janet; and numerous relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Vara; his brother Robert; and his parents. A Celebration of John's Life will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Cayucos Community Church, located at 3rd and Ocean Ave. in Cayucos. A reception to follow. I did not know John directly, yet when i was young i hired on to the JAA team, It was a great team to be associated with and I learned everyday, I worked my way to my first Project Superintendent position. Marvin was Tough and Fair, I always assumed he picked that up From Mr. John A Alexander himself. It is with much Gratitude and Respect in my Honor for this Man.

My Father Buzz Flick worked for him when they began tilt-up in the late 50s early 60s, even cleaned bricks for him in Los Angeles. I started working for him as a mere kid as a summer job. Cleaning lumber in the back of the yard in Bell Gardens. Knew Red Secker and his son Marvin. Have many stories.

John will always be a fond memory to me. Great mind and a loving spirit. I am 87 now and hope to see you and Tank soon. I am sure you would have had a solution for our present problem.

It is with great sadness that l learned of Johns passing. He was much more than a friend. I truly thought of him as family. He was a huge part of both my late husbands and my life for more than 40 years. He and my husband Clyde, partnered many ecological developments over the years. John was one of the most brilliant men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. The world is a much better place today because of Johns foresight.

Uncle John saved my life when I was very young. I fell in the river up at Copperopolis; he was the one who saw me first - he jumped into the rapidly moving river and pulled me to safety.
That incident is probably my earliest memory.
I will always remember his quick smile and what a fun person he was.

Dear Carol, I was incredibly saddened to hear of Dr. John's passing. He was by far one of my favorite clients and I thought of him as a friend since I first met him in the late 1980s. I have been meaning to come up to see you both at the ranch again, but have been quite ill for the last few years. I will miss my conversations with him.

Dear Carol,
It was with great surprise to come upon John's obituary today (May 7) as I was looking for someone else on the website. John was such a special man who really loved life and packed so much into it. It was obvious you were the apple of his eye! We are saddened to learn of his passing and know it leaves a huge hole in your life. Our hearts and love go out to you as you adjust to this great loss in your life. Love 'n prayers, Mary and Bill Tooley

John Alexander was one of the kindest, intelligent men I have ever met. While care taking his wife Midge at Villa Creek, we became great friends. He had the answer to Cambria's water shortage 36 years ago.... Recycle. I love you John. I will miss knowing you are there.... Sincere heartfelt thoughts to your family. Sarah Russo

My friend Tank Nelson and I decided to drive up to John's castle by the ocean one day in 1995. He welcomed us like we were long lost friends and the friendship grew. We visited him many times and grew to love both he and Carol. His death at 99 was far too soon as he had so much to continue to give. Vaya con dios mi amigo and say hello to Tank for me. See you soon.
