Joseph Clokey Obituary

Joseph Clokey Joseph Clokey, affectionately known as "Gumby's Little Brother," passed away unexpectedly last month at the age of 56, due to a cardiac arrest. Joe was President of Premavision/ Clokey Productions, which produced the widely popular Gumby television series and the Davey and Goliath show. The legendary clayboy Gumby, originally created by Joe's parents Art and Ruth Clokey, has been a pop icon worldwide for more than 60 years. Under Joe's leadership, it has continued to enjoy cult-status renown among children and adults alike. In addition to remastering the Gumby library and promoting Gumby through museum exhibits, festivals, TV shows, speaking engagements, parades, and new products and productions, Joe served as story consultant for Gumby Dharma, the Emmy award winning documentary about Gumby and Art Clokey. He led the writing and production of Davey and Goliath's Snowboard Christmas, a-one hour special. Joe's passion for Gumby and stop motion animation, combined with his charisma, eloquence and encyclopedic knowledge, served him well as he championed the family legacy. Compassion, optimism, integrity, indefatigable energy, joy, flexibility, imagination and an adventurous spirit, defined both Joe and Gumby. Filmmakingscripting, shooting and editingwas Joe's creative love. He had deep interests in movies and music, hiking and healthy living, tennis and traveling. He was open to all aspects of life, from politics to poetry, from surfing to spirituality. For many people, he was not only a seeker, but a beacon of light. Joe's smile lit up the world. He lived each day to the fullest, always serving and giving generously to others. Joe Clokey was an impassioned advocate for ecology and social justice, and his concerns made their way into Gumby and Davey productions. Prior to joining his father in the Gumby business, Joe founded San Luis Video Publishing, which distributes over 200 educational films, including the 65 videos on horticulture, agriculture and sustainability, which Joe wrote, directed and produced. Clokey's environmental and entrepreneurial interests began at an early age. Encouraged by his mother's horticultural expertise and his father's fascination with the natural world, the 8-year-old Joe raised succulents and cacti, which he sold to a local nursery from his wagon. At Cal Poly State University, he earned his B.S. in horticulture and was known for his "Captain Ecology" column in the student paper. He was active in many environmental and socially responsible community organizations and served as president of the Native Plant Society. A dedicated, hands-on father, Joe enjoyed playing baseball, hiking and camping with his three children, whom he had with his first wife, Laurie Jora Landis. Joe, and his current wife, Joan Rock Clokey, have run the Gumby companies side-by-side for the last decade, partners in marriage and in business. Joe was especially proud of the book that he co-authored with Joanthe recently released definitive pictorial biography of his father and Gumby: Gumby Imagined, The Story of Art Clokey and His Creations. Joan will continue to lead Premavision/Clokey Productions, bringing Gumby to the next generation. Joe was a devoted son, who cared tirelessly for both his parents as they aged. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Parkander Clokey; his father Arthur, Clokey; and sister, Ann Helene Clokey. He is survived by his wife, Joan; his children: Shasta, Sequoia and Sage; and his aunt, Dr. Dorothy Parkander. Services will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 490 Los Osos Valley Rd., Los Osos, California. A family-friendly paddle out/ surfer tribute will launch from Coleman Beach in Morro Bay at 9:00 am that day. Memorials/donations may be directed to Sierra Club, California Native Plant Society, and the Dorothy Parkander Chair in Literature at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL.

I´m writing this three years after Joe left us. That´s a true testament to the impact he made on my family´s life.
I worked closely with Joe on Gumby and D&G for many years through thick and thin and I still think about him most every day. Because we were creative partners, things were not always peaceful between us. But I know Joe valued me as much as I valued him ; that is a feeling I will never forget. Thanks for all the great memories my brother. Every word that has been expressed here in these messages is so true... And who do you know that leaves that kind of legacy?

You did Joe.

Thank You. I miss you.

Just like Gumby, Joe Clokey was the kindest person who ever lived. After hearing how he has passed away, it really broke my heart. I couldn't help but feel extremely sorry for his family who truly care about him as much as I did for Art Clokey. All I can do now is only wish Joe the very best.

Having worked for both Art and Ruth back in the late 60s, early 70's, I am sad to read this about Joe! he was very helpful in helping me see some old friends at the Glendora Celebration of Gumby. It was my privilege to donate a script and a miniature I had made for "School, Who Needs it!" RIP Joe!

Joe was the sweetest, kindest, most positive and creative person I have ever worked with. He had a hilarious sense of humor and was always quick to laugh and tell it like it is. We worked on two wonderful projects together and I had the honor of meeting his Dad on one of them. My wife and I send loving prayers to your spirit Joe, and comfort to Joan and your family. I will miss working with you and laughing with you. I was very lucky to have known you.

Joe was a sweetheart. He had a sweet tenor voice when I sang with him for a time in the choir of St. Peter's Church in Morro Bay. Joe stood tall in the middle of five men, always having very good posture. He had a beard and could have played Jesus in a hipster movie about Jesus. Joe took teasing well, which made me like him all the more.

For me, Joe was a good man and a good father. He seemed to have an inner love of others and life. I will miss camping with Joe and his kids at Live Oak and the honesty he brought to men's meetings. My prayers go out to his kids and wife and those who were close to him. I think this community, his family, and my family and I will miss some of the magic and good heart that he carried within him. Bless you Joe!

Joe was part of our extended family. We shared in many intimate times camping and in nature. We had fun engaging in high spirited political & spiritual discussions at the dinner table. At the end of a visit he would hug us with a big smile and look back at our daughter Ella, and remind her that he always considered her to be like a second daughter and most remembered will be his unconditional love & support to our family. He departed too soon! Sure wish we could have had one more time together to be able to say good-bye. I send my love and blessings to the Clokey family.

I worked on the Gumby 1980"s TV series. I remember Joe coming to visit the studios, always bringing a special positive and caring energy. I saw Joe several times over the recent years, and he was exactly the same! Just a warm, caring, high energy man filled with passion. My heart and prayers are with his family and all those that will greatly miss him.

Joe,

You left us way too soon. But, while you were here, thank you for making this spinning sphere that much better with your undeniable humility, kindness, good humor, and impassioned zest for life. I'll miss our nature walks, telling corny jokes to each other, and your unmistakable and infectious Joe Clokey laugh.

Love You Brother,
Abe

As a member of the Anthony Scott family, I heard so much about Gumby, and the love Anthony and so many people had for Art and Joe. Such a loss takes time to absorb and my heart goes out to the whole family. Few people leave the legacy Joe did.

I was just so sorry to hear about the passing of Joseph Clokey. I did not know him personally but he was very kind and obviously loving to his son when I met him at Gumby Fest a few years ago. Rest in peace. My condolences to your family.

Joe was a great friend and collaborator. Super positive and excited to be alive. He cherished his family and loved the outdoors, especially this beautiful area. I will miss working and spending time with him. I am including a photo from one of our recent hikes up to Valencia Peak in Montaña de Oro.

So sorry to hear about the passing of a kind, decent human being. He was really kind to me three years ago when I had a bad accident and was bedridden for almost 5 months. I contacted him through Facebook about a Gumby film I had in my collection. I described it to him and I also sent him a copy of it on DVD, transferred from a beautiful Kodachrome print I had in 16mm in my collection. It turned out that I had in my possession the original Gumby pilot that they only had a silent segment of in their archive. I had the entire film with sound. I was happy to have Joe add it to the archive. Small price since Gumby had given me such great joy ever since I saw the films on Howdy Doody. My print came from Roger Muir who Joe knew. Art must have given the print to Roger way back when. Thank you Joe and Joan for keeping Gumby and Pokey alive for the next generations to enjoy. Next month at our NY Sons of the Desert meeting, we are running TRAIN TROUBLE as a tribute to Joe and his Dad. God Bless the Clokey family.

Joe was a lovable and loving friend to many. If he could, he would give the shirt off his back to those in need. Joe was a dreamer. He will be remembered fondly.

So sad to hear this. I worked with Joe on many occasions when shooting and editing the horticulture videos he scripted in the early 90's. A very honest, trustworthy, noble & decent human being. Condolences to the Clokey family.
