June Shepard Obituary

Our mom, June Shepard, 84, passed away resulting from Alzheimer''s Disease Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, in Atlanta, Ga. Mom grew up in Mosinee, Wis., daughter of Clara and E.A. Smith. She was a beauty, a tomboy and a brain. She earned her master''s degree in biology from the University of Wisconsin, where she met and married Stephen Knapp Atwater. She raised her four children in Galesburg, Ill. and Ashfield, Mass. With her beautiful voice, she sang to us, read out loud, took us camping and taught us to love all living things, rivers, mountains and rocks. She taught us how to kneel in a canoe like an Indian and do the J-stroke. She sewed beautifully and created lovely and uniquely personal homes. June returned to the university and earned a Ph.D. in genetics. She taught college and pursued her childhood dream, research to find a cure for cancer. She outlived two marriages, first to Stephen and then to Paul Shepard. She traveled the world and designed and built her last real home in Los Osos, which was surrounded by gardens of native plants she tended for many years. June is survived by her four Atwater kids Stephanie, Tom, Janet and Jonathan; and her four granddaughters. She loved us. Instead of flowers, a donation to World Wildlife Fund would have pleased June.

I'm sorry to lose my friend June. I loved how much she loved nature and her plants. And I relish the memories of intense conversations that we shared. June, thank you for coming to planet Earth. We were blessed by your presence.

Your mom and I share(d) the same name and so this notice was sent to me in a Google alert. I opened the file and now feel compelled to offer my condolences to your family. She was a most amazing woman and was clearly very much loved by her children. You've paid her a lovely homage in this eulogy. May she rest in peace.

June was our neighbor for many years here in Los Osos. We first met her when our home was under construction in the early 90s. She was always friendly and would give us a wave, or stop to chat. She was a very interesting and likeable lady. Later, she was very kind to me after my husband died unexpectedly. I appreciated that very much. My daughter, Lisa, and I send our condolences to all of you. Although someone else owns June's home now, we always will think of her when we take a walk down the road and see the yard with all of her plants and trees growing so well.

We had the privilege of knowing June for 15 years before she moved to Atlanta, near the end of her life. We hiked, camped, cooked, and examined ideas together. The family's obituary for her brings back so eloquently all these happy memories. What a poignant delight to read! We feel for your loss.

With love,

I'm so sorry June had Alzheimers. She was such a force of nature that I didn't think that possible. I remember that she tried to eradicate the Lannaria in her yard in Los Osos which proved as difficult as eliminating the poison oak.
To Life! May June rest well!
I will miss her.
Peace be unto you, her family.
