Michael Cotter Obituary

Michael Henry Cotter, 61, of San Luis Obispo passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at his home in San Luis Obispo. Michael and his twin brother Richard were born in1949, to Charles "Jack" and Jeannette Cotter. Much of Michael''s youth was spent roaming the Irish Hills of Los Osos, where his grandfather, Richard Beecham had a ranch, most of which is still in the Beecham family. Michael continued his love of the out doors and nature for the rest of his life and took great peace in the quiet places he found there. Following graduation from San Luis Obispo High School in 1967, Michael graduated from Cuesta College in 1969 and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1972, with a BS in Biological Science. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he continued his education in Medical Technology and completed his enlistment as a sergeant in 1976. Michael returned to his home town to join the staff of San Luis Obispo General Hospital as a Medical Laboratory Technologist and supervisor, where he remained until that laboratory was closed in 2006. At the time of his death he was a Medical Laboratory Scientist with Central Coast Pathology. Michael was a big brother to many, but most especially his two sisters Candace and Sharon, and brother Patrick. A tremendously generous man, he remained vigilant to what others in the family might need that he could provide. His sense of humor was reflected in the delight he took in teasing his siblings as adults, just as he had as children. His love and concern for his family was matched only by the devotion bestowed upon the family Golden Retrievers. His most joy filled moments were spent wrestling with them, or accompanying them on long adventurous walks along Orcutt Road, or the beach in Morro Bay. Michael''s other favorite moments included family holidays, and his annual travels in the company of his mother, Jeannette. He considered these trips to be great adventures with his best friend, as they explored and photographed much of the Southwestern United States. Michael will be remembered and missed most especially for his intelligence, playful humor, warmth and generosity, and the love displayed by his smile and strong warm hugs. He is survived by sisters Candace and Sharon; brother Patrick; sister-in-law Sharon O''Hara; nieces Meghan Sapp and Briana Sapp; aunt Dorothy Davidson; uncle Jim Beecham; and many cousins. He is also greatly missed by his Golden Retrievers, Mika and Luci. Michael was preceded in death by brother Richard 1949. Graveside services will be held Thursday Nov. 18 at Los Osos Valley Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the ASPCA, or Golden Retriever rescue.

I began my life with Mike as my protector and my playmate. We were inseperable for our first decade or more in this life. His imagination and spirit of endless adventure during those years nurtured my own, and still do. For Mike, a chicken coop was a "fort", and a field of hay was a magical land where the faerie folk dwelled. His was a gentle and sensitive spirit, and a part of him was always apart from the physical realm. I take great comfort in knowing he is now living in the true joy of pure spirit, and his body is no longer a burden to him His hugs and his unique sense of humor will forever be missed.

Though your body may be gone, the spirit lives on, and may that give us all comfort.

I worked with Michael at General Hospital. He was always a pro - doing it right and letting you know how to do it right. Likewise, his example set the bar higher.
Thanks Michael. Peace to all his family.

I met Mike as we walked our dogs in the lovely estate area off Orcutt Road. His gentleness and devotion to Mika and Luci, giving them full exercise, as well as the kindness he showed to all our doggies out there made those morning jaunts so pleasurable.
We shared stories about our families and I appreciated his good humored perspective on life.
He confided that his battle with Leukemia was going well and he looked forward to getting healthy, so it was with shock and sadness that I read of his death.
If Luci and Mika need a home (together!), perhaps I can be of some help.
I will miss him.

We met Mike during several morning walks on Orcutt. He was always kind and talkative and patient listening to my kids' random stories. We will miss him very much.

I will always remember Michael sitting on the floor in the living room of the family home playing with the "girls", Mika and Lucy, the beautiful golden retrievers. How Michael loved those dogs! They were truly a joy for him.

Michael took his role of Big brother very seriously. He was always a source of support to his family.

Michael was also like a brother to me. What I enjoyed most about him was his sense of humor. We were always able to share a laugh. I will miss him a lot.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I have known and worked with Mike since Feb of 2009. He was always a gentleman, kind and thoughtful, and he had the heart of a teacher, because he was always willing to say here is a better way to do this, and did it in his own kind, gracious and professional way.

His devotion to his sisters, his brother, and his family was inspiring. We often saw Mike on Orcutt Road walking the dogs and he always was beaming with happiness. My heart goes out to his family for their loss.

Rest in Peace, Friend.

Michael was my brother from another mother - and being considered "family" by Michael and the rest of his family healed many of my childhood hurts. I will forever miss his generosity and the strength and warmth of his hug. I know he is at peace.

We got to know Mike when we would see him walking his beautiful dogs. We were impressed by his devotion to them. What a genuinely kind and friendly man. We will miss having our little chats. May your memories of him bring you comfort.

Working with Michael at SLOGH was a privilege. He was a gentle man and was always polite and soft spoken. I was so sad to read of his death, my deepest sympathies to the family.

We got used to seeing first his mom (I think) and then Mike walking those beautiful dogs. We would get to chatting and found them both to be wonderfully genuine, pleasant people. As fellow dog lovers we appreciate the love he had for Mika and Luci and they for him. We will miss seeing him walking the girls and our little visits.
May your memories of him give you comfort.
