Robert Dickson Obituary

Robert "Bob" A. Dickson, 90, long term and well-known member of the Morro Bay community, passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 He was doing what he loved, attending a reunion of the United States Air Corp 91st Bomb Group at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base when he was taken ill. Bob was a B-17 pilot during World War II. Shot down while on a mission over Germany, he survived 18 months in a German prisoner of war camp, Stalag Luft 1, near the north Baltic Sea. There, he made many friends, who all shared little food but much strength and hope. Upon his return to the United States in 1945, Bob continued his career in the military for 11 years. Following his military service, Bob began a long and successful career in the aerospace industry with the Walter Kidde Company and specialized in fire safety equipment for aircrafts. In 1986, Bob retired to Morro Bay, where he became deeply involved in the local community. His love for the environment, people and the Central California coast lifestyle are well-known. He participated in many civic and political events. He was committed to activities related to military issues, including air shows and fundraisers for veterans, of which he was particularly proud. His passion for flying and airplanes remained with him throughout his entire lifetime. Bob was a long-time enthusiast of big band music and was, in fact, a walking encyclopedia on all things "Big Band." He was also interested in fishing and held a fascination with electronics and "new-fangled" technology. He kept up with all the latest gadgets. Bob was a loyal friend, and continued to make new friends throughout his lifetime. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him. His was a life full of experience and love. Bob is survived by his loving family; sister, Ellen Belcher; daughters Kate, Janet, Jody and Diane; grandchildren Pat, Jonathon and Amanda; and four great-grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to a service at noon, Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the Estrella Warbird Museum, 4251 Dry Creek Road in Paso Robles. So live that when the summons comes to join That innumerable formation in the Sky. Thou go not like a prisoner to his doom But as a brave aviator wrapped In the glory of his aircraft ''" And silently fly off To lands and horizons yet unknown.
