Robert Mohle Obituary

Robert "Bob" Mohle, 94, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, beside his wife of 18 years, Marilyn Amundson-Mohle. She followed, just hours later. Bob was born in January 1916 in Antigo, Wis., and grew up in San Pedro, Calif. He loved to watch the battleships drop anchor at San Pedro Harbor and sailors pour ashore in their dress whites. He graduated UC Berkeley and was stationed aboard the USS Vestal in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The Vestal, tied up next to the battleship Arizona, sustained heavy damage. Bob, removing ammunition from the Vestal, incurred injuries and was awarded the Purple Heart. He then met and married Janet Johnson in Virginia, and they had two children, Robert and Charles. In 1960, Bob retired from the Navy as a Commander after 20 years of service. The family moved to Manhattan Beach, Calif., where he earned his teaching credential at UCLA. After teaching at Alexander Fleming Junior High School in Lomita, he retired in 1976. He and Janet enjoyed visits with family and traveled extensively in Europe. She passed away in 1989. In 1991, Bob met Marilyn Amundson, the second love of his life. They were married in 1992 and spent many happy years together. Bob was an accomplished artist and active members of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Los Angeles Yacht Club. Bob will always be remembered as a man of the highest integrity, kind, always a gentleman, strong and yet a big heart. He was a great listener and good storyteller. We miss you and love you Bob Mohle. You will always have a place in our hearts.
